Honestly, the Penny reveal was a fantastic way to subvert our expectations, the proper way.

Let’s be honest, everyone was kinda thinking she was gonna come back. She’s a robot, they can rebuild her, they have the technology. But the prevailing theories were that she’d come back without her memories or that it would look like Penny and not be Penny.

So when Penny comes back, no-one is all that surprised. Surprised she came into the Volume this early? Yeah, maybe. But everyone was expecting her at some point.

Then she looks at Ruby. Her eyes widen. She takes a wind-up. And rushes to hug Ruby. She remembers her first and best friend. 

And the story goes a way we didn’t expect.

Don’t get me wrong, this happiness is gonna come at a price. Penny lives, but her death has to have lasting repercussions. We’ve got her back, but we will pay for it. Resurrection is never cheap, not in a good narrative, and neither is death. 

This isn’t a cheap twist. This fits into the ongoing narrative in some way.

But Penny lives, and she will continue to live (because killing her off a second time won’t have the same impact), and we can all be grateful for that.

Up until the moment Miles and Kerry reveal the price. Then we might regret it.
