âOh, but I can,â she returned with a beaming smile, not willing to let an ounce of her own anxieties crack through the surface and instead formulated a cool, confident exterior. Dipping below the water so that her mouth was submerged, she tried her best to form a believable thought. âMm, playing for a division 1 school like that is a lot of pressure, Luke; you donât get it.â It was true, and something Andie had given quite a bit of thought to over the last year, but in the end thatâs really not what deterred her. She knew she could handle it; she had the skill to back it, the smarts and drive to keep up with her schoolwork. âBesides⌠I donât know what I want to be, you know? Why waste my time trying to figure it out 1500 miles away from my dad? It just seems, I donât know. Foolish.â And again, another thought sheâd pondered, one that was swiftly rejected by her father just as she knew it would be by Luke. âCome on, would having me around really be so bad?â she asked, her tone teetering on flirtatious as her lips pulled into a playful smirk, moving closer to him as an act of distraction.Â
Sheâd told him the truth, but now she wanted a way out, a way to make the moment lighter. Her feet drew her closer and closer to Luke until he was within grasp, a low âHm?â leaving her lips before allowing a lingering silence to hang the mere inches between them. Sure, this was all a distraction, until of course she was so close that it wouldnât take much effort at all to plant her lips against his. But in keeping up with the charade, she allowed her desire to help build up suspense⌠and within moments she was jumping on his shoulders in an attempt to playfully dunk him under the water.Â
Lucas heard the words, the excuses, and ramblings of his best friend, yet not even for a second did the words she was saying sound slightly believable to the boy. He knew Andie, far too well to consider that any of the pretenses she was feeding him were actually legitimate. She was holding back, using fear of incompetence he knew she didnât have and her father as some sort of way to make him accept that she was staying in town. âBullshit,â Lucas simply stated, not buying whatever it was that she was selling. âHaving you around could never be bad for me, Dee. But, weâre not talking about me here, this is about you and the future youâve always wanted. The one that youâve worked hard for, you deserve it.â
The intensity of their conversation seemed to wash away with the sudden proximity of their bodies, the way she was looking at him now held Lukeâs gaze and it was impossible to look away from her. He was mesmerized. âFuck,â Lucas whispered, terrified that lines were going to be crossed, but how could he not lean into her stare? It felt like Andie was calling him with just her eyes, for a few seconds they were silent and nothing felt heavier than the sound of everyone around them screaming and laughing. âYouâre beautiful â,â the words just barely out of his lips, as he leaned in only to be caught off guard by the blonde jumping on him. He went from the heat rising through his body one second, to the coldness of the water around him the next. Once he managed to wrap his arms around her and steady himself above water, Luke met her gaze once more. This time she wasnât going anywhere, as his hands firmly gripped both of her arms, keeping her close to him. âYou are really beautiful, Andie.â He didnât move at first, allowing his words to linger in the air for just a few seconds before his eyes were shut and he was leaning into her, crashing his hungry lips against her soft pink ones, there was no going back from this but for the very first time, Lucas didnât care.Â
