Something(s) the Ros would dislike/hate in a partner, or something they would break up over ?

For Amber, someone who doesn't take her seriously. She's not talking about the dramatic kind of disrespect, she means the subtle kind. The person who laughs at her ambitions, or softens them in retelling, or acts like her intensity is a personality flaw to be managed. She doesn't need someone who matches her at every turn, but she needs someone who doesn't treat her drive like a problem. She'd also have a hard time forgiving emotional passivity—if you're not in it, actually in it, she will notice long before you say anything, and she will not wait.

For Anwar, someone performative. Specifically, someone who performs at them. They have very good radar for it and they find it genuinely exhausting, not in a moralistic way but in a "I can't connect to someone I can't find" way. They'd also struggle significantly with someone who makes everything a competition or treats conflict as a scoreboard. Anwar needs to feel like you're both trying to understand, not trying to win.

For Charlie, someone who pushes. Charlie moves at their own pace in everything, and a partner who treats that as a challenge to overcome will get exactly what they'd expect: Charlie becoming more closed, not less. They're also autistic, and they will not stay somewhere that requires them to perform neurotypicality to be found acceptable. If you need them to be easier, you're not compatible, and they know it.

For Haoyu, pressure. Any kind. Ultimatums especially. He knows he moves slowly and he knows it's frustrating and he is, genuinely, trying to work on it, but the moment someone tries to rush him by making the alternative explicit, he shuts down completely. He also needs to feel like he can be funny without it being read as deflection, because sometimes it is deflection and he knows that too, but having it named every time he makes a joke is its own kind of suffocating.

For Izzie, cruelty that tries to pass as honesty. She knows the difference. She will give a partner a lot of grace for saying hard things, she values honesty and she knows relationships require it, but "I'm just being honest" as a cover for unkindness will lose her very quickly. She'd also find it genuinely hard to stay with someone who didn't want the people she loves to be part of her life. She's not asking her partner to love her friends the way she does. She just needs them not to compete with them.

For Mattie, someone who is kind about the wrong things. What I mean is: Mattie can spot when she's being handled, when someone is being tender with her disability rather than with her. She'd rather someone said the wrong thing sincerely than the right thing carefully. She's also got a pattern, and she knows it, and someone who leverages her loyalty against her, makes her feel like she's the problem for being hurt, or like leaving is proof of something bad about her, that's the thing that would actually break her, because it's happened before and she stayed that time and she knows what it cost her.

For Noah, someone erratic. He can adapt; he's more flexible than he presents. But someone who changes the terms without notice, who makes commitments and then unmakes them quietly, who treats plans as suggestions, it maps onto something old and painful for him and he won't be able to separate the present situation from the history. He also won't stay with someone who makes him feel like his standards are the issue. They're not the issue. They're just specific.

For Scarlette, someone who tries to cage her. She's been through enough to know that the version of herself that fits inside someone else's comfort zone isn't really her anymore, and she won't do that again. She'd also find it very hard to stay with someone who couldn't handle her grief, not who fixed it, just who didn't flinch from it. She lost her dad, and that lives in her, and a partner who needs her to put it away would be asking her to put away something she can't.

For Theo, someone who can't handle his silences. He's quiet. He thinks before he speaks and sometimes he thinks for a long time and a partner who reads that as indifference or absence is going to spend the whole relationship solving a problem that isn't there. He'd also leave, quietly, definitively, over infidelity. Not because he's rigid, but because loyalty is the thing he actually requires and its absence isn't something he knows how to put back together once he's seen it.

Oh, what is that? They are selling my demo for 400 dollars :D That is rather expensive for a free demo, I think. Or is it just my logo they are selling? Interesting. I doubt it sells well, but if it has I would like my cut! But I do not at least know about selling my demo, so perhaps they missed a step somewhere.

Ros reaction to mc saying "you are the best thing that's happened to me."?

Amber goes very still. Not in a bad way, in the way she goes still when something catches her off guard and she hasn't decided how to process it yet. She'll look at you for a long moment, then look away, jaw working slightly, and when she looks back she'll say something like "don't say things you don't mean," but quieter than you'd expect. She means it as a test. She also means it as a wish.

Anwar laughs, not dismissively, just startled, a little undone, and then they pull you in. They're the type to repeat it back to you later when they think you're asleep, just to see how it sounds. It sounds right to them. It always did.

Charlie doesn't know what to do with it. They go very calm and very careful, the way they do when something matters too much to respond to casually. After a beat, they'll say "that's a lot of pressure to put on me," and when you protest they'll add, quietly, "I don't mind it."

Haoyu immediately makes a joke about it. Something deflecting, something stupid. He's grinning, though. He's absolutely grinning. Ask him about it later when he's less defensive and he won't deny it meant everything.

Izzie cries. She tries not to. She laughs at herself for crying. She hugs you too hard and says "okay, no, stop, I'm not ready," and then doesn't let go for a very long time.

Mattie goes quiet for a moment, and you can see her deciding whether or not to believe you. She wants to. That's the thing with Mattie, she always wants to. She'll say "that's a really lovely thing to say" and mean it as both gratitude and distance, because she's learned to be careful with things that feel too good. Give her time. She'll get there.

Noah doesn't say anything for a second. Then: "okay." Just that. But the way he says it, like you've handed him something he didn't know he was waiting for, says rather more than he intended.

Scarlette grins and says "obviously," and it's mostly armour and mostly a joke, but she pulls you in by the collar right after so you know it landed exactly where she wanted it to.

Theo looks at you like you've said something genuinely alarming. Then the look softens, slowly, the way everything does with Theo, slow enough that you notice each degree of it. He doesn't say anything back. He doesn't need to. You've just watched his entire face decide something.

What's changed:

If you played the original Chapter 1, you'll notice this is essentially a different game. The original came in in at 26k words, the rewrite is 469k. The prose has been overhauled from the ground up, with richer writing, deeper characterisation, and far more branching to reflect your MC and their choices. Scenes that existed before have been rebuilt rather than revised, and there's a significant amount of new content that wasn't in the original at all.

What happens:

Arrive at the villa and meet your fellow islanders one by one as they enter.

A one-on-one conversation with one of the nine other islanders before the coupling, who you spend that time with is your choice.

The coupling ceremony, where you'll be paired up for the days ahead.

Word count

469k words total (+443k from the original Chapter 1). Individual playthroughs are a fraction of that, the word count reflects how much the content branches to account for your choices and your MC.

A note for returning players: Chapters 2–11 are no longer accessible while the rewrite is in progress. Chapter 1 is the only playable content for now, but it's a much more substantial Chapter 1 than the one you remember.

BotL Progress - April

Hey everyone!

Things have been fairly chill here on the blog this month, which is more than fine, and I'm still plodding away at Chapter Nine. I somehow actually managed around 100,000 words this month, which would ordinarily be enough to have finished a chapter, but Nine is quite the beast, being the penultimate one and, really, the correct time to get a lot of plot threads tied off as neatly as possible.

All to say, it's probably going to be about double the length of a typical chapter, at least.

This is, naturally, quite fine. As an author, I've got to to what I've got to do to try and give things satisfying conclusions that aren't too rushed or terse, and I'm doing my best to achieve that, especially in the RO/PO scenes.

I anticipate (optimistically) that we might be looking at a mid-June public release of Chapter Nine, after which hopefully Ten and the Epilogue will be slightly less... unwieldy.

I'll let you know how that's all going when we hit June, but until then, I hope you all have a better May than your April was.
