Life was not always easy for the Shaw triplets, their family did not have a lot of money, and what little they had was generally wasted on their mother’s shopping addiction. There house was filled with useless junk, while the kids grew out of the shoes, but had to wear them two sizes to small for months at a time.
Shortly after the triplets 8th birthday, all of the incoming packages must have drawn some unwanted attention, because they fell victim to a home robbery. The triplets were in school, but the parents were at home, and in the robber’s frustration over all of their junk being well…junk, the parents were left for dead.
This lead to years of foster care for the triplets, and even separation sometimes. Taylor, just a small boy, had no way to defend himself from the abuses he suffered in some of these homes, and they’re experiences that to this day, Taylor does not speak about.
At the age of 14, all three triplets were adopted by the Swift family, a god-send really. Hollie and Carl, along with their two younger children welcomed the triplets with open arms, and helped them settle into life in Cotton Plant.
They also made sure to send all three to therapy, knowing they had all had a hard life, they wanted to make sure they all had someone to talk to about it. It was throughout this process that Taylor realized she identified as female.
Her parents were supportive, and just wanted her to be happy, so it was more therapy, and doctors appointments, and a whole flurry of things to get Taylor to where she needed to be. She decided to change her name to Penelope, or Penny for short, as a fresh start.
Things were progressing well, and she even had bottom surgery scheduled at the age of 19, when a pre-surgery check revealed someone in her blood work. After more tests, it was cancer. This lead to a delay in the process, while she received treatment.
Penny was no stranger to support groups, throughout therapy, she’d been brought to many, for those who had parents that passed away, for those who were in foster care, children of abuse, and for transgendered youth, so it was no shock that she found herself in therapy again, this time for cancer patients.
However, it was in this group that she met Charles, he was charming at first, but things grew strange quickly. After two years of dating, she knew things needed to end when he’d hit her. But Charles couldn’t accept that, and soon it became obsessive, him showing up wherever she was, including her chemo sessions, her hang outs, her other group sessions. Charles was there.
It was when she went into remission, at the age of 23 that things turned really ugly. She was moving on, finding it easier to avoid him, when she’d finally rescheduled her surgery, and he couldn’t accept that she was going to be happy without him. He showed up in her apartment, and things got ugly. A fight ensued, and it ended with Charles being arrested, and Penny having to live the rest of her life a large scar across her cheek from a knife.
It’s 6 years later, and while Penny has fully transitioned, she fears she’ll never find happiness after everything she’s been through.
