i'm thinking about becoming a dm and starting my own dnd campaign for a few friends but i have no idea where to start .... any ideas/tips?

Villain, maybe? Lot of iconic adventures are based on that, from Palace of the Vampire Queen to Tyranny of Dragons. Both Pathfinder CRPGs are villain centric (Nyrissa and Areelu Vorlesh/Deskari), too.

Or could just go with a place to explore—no reason you couldn’t basically do Kingmaker (“establish a new country in a place nobody has been able to hold for long”) but without Nyrissa as a personal reason for the place falling apart. Could just be more generally cursed, for example. Way back in the BECMI days, Isle of Dread and Keep on the Borderlands were location-centered; there were things going on but the adventures were explicitly intended to be a jumping-off place for DMs to set more adventures in the area they depicted.
