New Year's Fanfiction/Fan Art Resolutions -

So the 100 fandoms didn't make it... so instead I'm going to try to do something that sounds better but may be worse-

idk if this is controversial or not, but I really like when non-professional writing like fic has hints of author bleedthrough when it comes to like, what different people assume is common knowledge. Like sometimes I’ll be reading a fic and it’ll just be obvious that the person writing it is either obsessed with medicine or has been to medical school, because they’ll use terms that are just a shade too technical without explaining them. It’s never the super specific stuff that they’d know other people are unaware of, it’s always the things that once you’ve known it for a while you forget it’s niche knowledge. It’s fun because as a fanfic reader it reminds me of how this is a fun hobby community, where everyone has their own thing going on outside of fandom. Everyone’s got their own specialties and they can’t help but write that into their work sometimes

Digital Company (Limbus Company X Digimon)

Been kicking this around ever since I found myself disappointed by a fic that promised the Sinners as knowledgable Digimon fans... only to be disappointed that it was essentially a retelling of season 1.

So I've talked with my girlfriend to kind of think about not which Digimon fit the Sinners, but what a Digimon story would do to benefit the Sinners.

Personally, I believe that making this into a modern AU + de-aging the Sinners might be the closest to a Digimon story, but I think that using the Sinners as adults can still work with their stories. Just having D-Corp realize that Lob Corp data has become physical Golden Boughs they can get to and creating an off-shoot company to grab them before other Fixer Offices or Syndicates can grab them either.

please remember that it’s okay to use popular tropes and cliché’s in your writing. just remember to make them your own, and put your own kinda spin on them. 

don’t let yourself be stopped by what other people say you can or can’t do when it comes to writing. you are allowed to write about whatever you want, regardless of how popular it is in mainstream media.

So, I've had this issue with Pokemon's world building that has been niggling at me as I try to come up with my own Pokemon region.

The first four regions are based on actual typographical regions, specifically those in Japan.

Kanto is based on Kanto Johto is based on Kansai Hoenn is based on Kyushu Sinnoh is based on Hokkaido with a little bit of Russia's Sakhalin

Then we get to Gen 5, based on real life New York- City. I've been to the City and I think it's a... unique take

Then I found out Orre exists and it's a gen 3 game. And it takes the place of this futuristic desert based on... Arizona? An entire state drilled down to one thing? I haven't been to Arizona myself, but typography maps have it as a part of the Plateau Region in between the Great Basin and Rocky Mountains.

THEN we get to more... egregious regions. France is made into one region with subregions which is advertised through the Pokedex that is only used this ONE time then never again. Alola is based off of Hawai'i which... okay I don't have enough research about Hawai'i and its culture to speak for it. I also dislike the fact that Galar is made to just be in Britain's shape and for how small Galar is it has extreme climates. (Isle of Armor and Crown Tundra actually make me feel worse about this because the routes outside of the Fighting/Ghost gym AND Ground/Ice gym don't make much sense to me to fit within the region.) Paldea is kind of the same for me though the open world makes it feel bigger it also feels more... empty? I don't know.

And as a DnD world builder who has been a fan of different Pokemon creators I always find myself INCREDIBLY saddened by the fact that states are treated as one region which sucks when states like Rhode Island, Delaware, and New Jersey kind of get ignored or eaten by other "states as regions" type world building...

So for my project of Pokemon world building, I would like to propose this-

A region that touches upon 13 different states within North America's Central Country, the Ohio River Valley. People may argue that it is too vast but I really think that if the exploration of regions is going to be properly explored, looking at what region where one lives and being able to change it around would be very fun. It lets you take in where you live as a possible starting town, and lets you take in the world around you for inspiration with the wildlife.

call me terminally academia-brained but i do think a lot of the fun of character analysis is figuring out how to build a compelling argument for a particular reading using lines of evidence from canon as well as meta/intertextual support

and you could say that what i’m saying here is basically “a lot of the fun of doing character analysis is doing character analysis” but let’s be real a lot of fandom character analysis is pretty heavily vibes-based. and i think that’s where i really chafe up against the traditional thought-terminating fandom attitude of like, everyone’s opinions hold equal weight and any interrogation of that is inherently hostile. because i think it’s fascinating to dig into where others are coming from in terms of their views on characters or dynamics or whatever, especially when they differ significantly from more commonly expressed views, and part of that digging is asking people okay what parts of canon are you drawing from to support your opinion? what parts of canon are you disregarding or downplaying? how does this argument hold up in the light of how race, gender, class, ability, etc. operate both in the piece’s in-fiction and real world contexts?

people on here make ocs and they're mostly men and they ship characters and they're always men and they have favourite characters and they're always men but sometimes they say the men are like women not trans ones though because that would be guh-ross and harsh the vibe of the #fandomspace and they write fanfiction about men and talk about how complicated and #deeplywritten their male favs are and they'll watch movies and tv shows with mostly male casts in every way that matters and not question it because well what do you want them to do about it and they don't even care that that's what they're doing to them it's pure coincidence they always like the male characters better it's pure chance that women are only interesting as yaoi cheerleaders and actually when they write female characters as yaoi cheerleaders they're doing them a favour because they were just so poorly written in the source material it's the charitable thing to do men men men men men men men and if you say anything about it well you're being a killjoy you're being no fun you're being homophobic you're being a misandrist god what is it about women right what is it about women always trying to ruin our fun? why do they care so much? they're just women. who wants to think about women at all.
