hi! so i just have a quick question… what’s the difference between antiblack and racist? like in what context should one be used and the other one not be? is antiblack like a specific way of referring to racism against black people? sorry to bother i just wanted to make sure i know where and when to use them and that i’m doing so correctly
Anti-Blackness is racism that's specifically centered around prejudice against Blackness (and or the Black community). All anti-Blackness is racism and anyone who perpetuates it, is racist.
It's something very unique and can't be compared to any other kinds of oppression. The thing about anti-Blackness is that it's global and deeply rooted across the world. It's something that's so deeply tied to society especially American society, that in order to combat it, it means reforming the entire country.
Like I said anti-Black racism can’t and shouldn’t be compared to other forms of oppression and Black struggles/issues shouldn’t be compared to other communities struggles and issues either. Anti-Blackness is a word only to be used when Black people are facing racism, whether that be systemically, verbally, etc. It exists in every non-Black community and anyone who isn’t Black is just as capable of perpetuating it as white people are.
For example, if a non-Black person co opts the Black Lives Matter movement (saying things like Latinx Lives Matter or Native Lives Matter) or uses the struggles of Black people to boost or shift focus to their own movements. As well as using Black people as mules to carry non-Black movements, expecting us “repay” non-Black communities for their ally ship to the Black community, or co opting words made by Black people to describe the unique oppression that we face. This also includes white queer people appropriating AAVE from Black women and Black queer spaces, which in turn further perpetuates that we “ghetto, loud, and ratchet.”
Another word you should know that is tied to anti-Blackness is misogynoir, which is a specific form of prejudice against Black women. It describes the struggles and oppression that Black women face because we are Black and women. That intersectionality is very specific and also a global issue, which again can be and often is perpetuated by non-Black folks (and Black men.) Misogynoir is something that people like Meg Thee Stallion and Beyoncé frequently face in and outside of the music industry.
I've also made a post about how colorism and misogynoir link!
Sorry this is short but I can’t sum up just how vast and deep something like this is. Anti-Blackness and other forms of it, whether gender specific or not, is a huge global issue, which I’ve barely skimmed the surface on in this post. It's something that continues to perpetuate that Black people (ESPECIALLY Black women) are aggressive, loud, criminals, not worth of love, and that the issues we face aren't real or significant. And also continues to make us targets of the police.
I honestly urge you to click these links, further educate yourself, and boost Black voices if you're looking to actively combat anti-Blackness, call it out/address it, and be anti-racism.
