ROSALIND SAYS NOTHING during his diatribe. she bears the raging words with nary a change of expression, nor a bat of red-rimmed, tired eyes. she has long-since shielded herself against fits of passion, of wild shouts and angry rants. she determined to feel nothing long ago, and she has succeeded stupendously. or so she thought until she saw her son battered and bloody and bound in chains before her eyes. but habits are hard to kill and reverse, so her implacable exterior remains intact. “------ are you quite finished?” an eyebrow raises, and her gaze is chilly. “or would you prefer to continue your childishness? both of us have nothing but time now.” she cares not that he wishes to die. she herself has wished to die many a time, but life does not grant wishes. life grants heartache and pain and horror. if rosalind can find an answer to her wishes, she will take it and do whatever to ensure its fulfilment. and, to her astonishment, she wishes to keep her son. and so she shall, hans’s personal wishes be damned.
HANS
mother is bitter . hans recognises this , of course — has seen it first-hand in a few occasions he’d rather not recall . and he’s about to bow down , says his hushed “see you at dinner” speech and scurry away — but then she opens her mouth again , and she … well , she’s mother . there’s not much to say on that . and hans is still his father’s boy , his body still so very made to follow and obey and be polite and be graceful when he’s under these circumstances . of course he can’t just scurry away , he thinks ; such hopeful thoughts like that die in the southern isles . nothing here is ever that simple , nothing here can go quite like you wish .
❛ as you said , corona suits me well . ❜ perhaps too well , because look at him , almost a year there and he’s nearly forgotten whose exactly his parents were . he looks at mother again , spotting how similar they truly look — and perhaps they even share the same expression of frowning and scowling — yet feeling so indifferent towards her . like , sure , they share the same blood , but so what ? if there’s one thing hans learns from corona is that your loved ones and family doesn’t always have to be biologically related . he could still feel king frederic’s tears meshed against his drying skin , despite he’s long took sail from the land of the sun many moons ago . ❛ yes . father had wanted to know if the king and queen of corona was granting me any titles to any of their lands . if they do , i’m able to stay at the kingdom permanently . ❜
“------ WHAT?” she has been told nothing of this intent of her husband’s. she knows, of course, why he sent the boy away. he is not sentimental enough to do it just because he dislikes the boy -- though, of course, he does. she knows of the ambition behind the relocation and fostering, behind the ‘friendliness’ between the southern isles and corona. the king wishes for all his sons to give him what he wanted from a daughter: marital alliances. and though king frederick and queen arianna have no children, not since they lost their only child to survive birth, hans might have encroached enough on their hearts to win titles and land and coin for himself -- and for the southern isles by extension.
she’s filled with an odd revulsion to the idea. “and... have king frederick and queen arianna spoken to you of such a gift?” if they have, the boy will be gone from her. that should make her happy... it should. it does, she tells herself, and lifts her head and hides the visage of stunned emotion from her hazel eyes. “i do hope you have not spoken to them of such a thing. it would be a pity for them to realize the grounds for your affection for them. i hear they are so very lonely, as childless monarchs tend to be.”
