Sheila didn’t know why she was being so understand, why she wasn’t getting mad. “Asp would’ve punished me anyway. She likes to use me as a scapegoat for literally everything that goes wrong in Nation, even if said thing isn’t my fault. She probably would’ve found another reason to throw me in solitary anyway. Almost kissing you? There are worse ways to end up in solitary.”
Susannah wanted to scoff at that. Miss Asp was a horrible person, and they both knew that. But as she listened to Sheila, the young woman became more confused than ever. Sure, Sheila was a scapegoat, but Susannah had betrayed her. She got Sheila put in solitary confinement, all because of her internal homophobia.
So why did it seem like Sheila forgave her?
'I liked the thought of almost kissing you,' she wanted to say, it was on the tip of her tongue, but she just kept quiet on that front. Instead, what she said was, "What else could she have gotten you in for?"
Sheila hadn't done anything wrong, as far as she knew.
