There is something hilarious about the fact the two prissiest members of the crew, Sanji and Nami, are also the ones that were raised by pirates.

I think is goes to show the amount of energy Zeff spent to make Sanji comfortable. And the dedication of Nami to make up for her years of struggle.

But also hilarious that they are the ones afraid of bugs. You would expect it from Nami but not from Sanji.

I'm a huge fan of your work. Can I ask - How did you develop the ability to write so well??? Trying to teach myself is extremely difficult so would appreciate any tips you can throw my way❤️❤️❤️

Thank you! Honestly, by reading a lot and learning what kind of stories resonate with me.

This is me coming at it from a psych background, but I think art is a very introspective process with a lot of self-exploration. I think that developing personal style is a hallmark of skill (especially in these AI times where you don’t need a soul to sling a technically-sound sentence together) and that every artist just needs to find their thing!

Find your thing, learn it inside and out, and then find a hundred different ways to take it apart and explore it on the page. Most people already know what they love (we search for books by genre, we search for fics by content tags), but the artist digs deeper to understand the how’s and why’s of a certain story’s appeal.

For me, it comes down to this: Be it for catharsis or escapism or comfort or whatever, some human need is being fed when we latch onto a given narrative. As a writer, you must identify and understand a hunger to know how to feed it.

My “thing” is humanizing, but not redeeming, the monstrous and otherworldly. Dark romance and folkloric themes are my main tools for that. There is a hunger to be loved, or at least coveted, by what we fear (especially when that fear is justified). This is the human need that my fics try to feed. The desire to be loved by an abuser is considered shameful (and indeed Theon spends much of my stories ashamed) but is so human. I held a space for readers to simply feel things that are deemed unacceptable in other spaces, and have that catharsis, that comfort, that grief. It’s not for everyone, but I wasn’t aiming for everyone.

Identify the themes and concepts and tropes that really appeal to you. Analyze what about them you like. Write the narratives you want to read. Find the hunger you want your story to feed. It takes time and practice, but your particular voice and style will come through.

Be compassionate with what you learn about yourself. Don’t be ashamed of the things you like, be it scary or sexual or “cringe” or whatever! There is so much flawed media out there that people adore because it resonated emotionally (Twilight gets by on sheer vibes to this day). If your thing is psychosexual horror, the feelgood romance audience is never going to get what you’re doing. That is ok! I’ve been in workshops where the people who knew where I was coming from got it instantly, while the people who were never into my kind of work suddenly became illiterate looking at it.

tldr Writing is communication. Technical skill can mostly be learned by mindful observation of other works, but voice and style is where the meat is. Don’t chase perfection or palatability, find what you like and fixate tf out of it. Build your voice and style on the backs of your passions via practice and shameless introspection.

#I do also write other genres there’s not just one hunger I find interesting ofc but yeah #humanizing the monstrous also goes hand in hand with dark humor #because humans are ridiculous even when being serious or cruel; there is often a petty or immature or emotional motivation #and I can never stop myself from pointing those things out #Let yourself have your quirks

sad reality of the fanfic-to-published work economy is that the weirdest people are willing to do it. that's why there's now hundreds of shitty no plot cishet hate-to-love enemies-to-lovers books that are ex reylo fanfic. and it's not even good. that's because the people who wrote book-quality steve/bucky and kirk/spock fic are too normal to think to themselves "i should get this porn published". they're too busy working in local government offices

Let's say I really wanted to reduce the number of children who die in car accidents. Car accidents are really bad, right? Nobody disagrees about that. And it would be much better for both the environment and the kids' health if they spent more time walking, or taking the bus. Perfectly reasonable. More cars off the road, safer roads, fewer kids getting hurt, healthier kids. A win-win!

Therefore, let's ban children from traveling by car and require all cars to have a scanner on the door that scans the government ID of everyone who gets in the car to make sure no kids are in there. After all, kids get hurt in car accidents all the time! We need to ban this right away!

I'm rewatching OPLA and I forgot how much they BEAT us over the head with gay zoro. From "you're asking the wrong guy" in response to Usopp asking for girl advice, to Zoro saying "should have brought me instead of the cook" (to accompany Luffy and Nami up the mountain) and Usopp calling him out with "Sanji will be fine..."

ive been watching some opla and I love how they captured luffy and zoro’s neurodivergent swag. luffy has never heard of social cues or volume control, is best friends with everyone he meets and always has like five unrelated thoughts spinning around in his head all centered around his pirate king hyperfixation just waiting to explode out of his mouth. zoro is like “i have no idea what to do in any social situation so I’m just not gonna bother trying to emote appropriately and only say what I think needs to be said”
