Disney’s Comic Strip Artist’s Kit by Carson van Osten.
You might know these already, but it is such good stuff I don’t think anybody minds if I share it here again. These hand-outs were meant as a way to get beginning artists working on the Disney comics to overcome some recurring drawing problems.
I found this on Mark Kennedy’s awesome blog: Temple of the Seven Golden Camels. Hence the ‘To Mark’ dedication on the fist page which, I guess, features some pretty sound advice for any artist:
“Just keep drawing my friend… Draw like the wind!”

Art from 2015. Human Shard and a Human Metal Sonic. Fini-mun did the fantastic colors for Shard!
An attempt at my own human Sonic
I wish spriting was easier for people to get into or understand or whatever, or at least that so many people didn’t use the same generic indie game 1px-wide-limbs-with-square-head sprite style because every time I see sprites in that style or see someone act as if old games actually looked that way I die inside. Even the games that did use 1px limbs and square heads and shit (mostly old Atari era stuff like Berzerk and various other flat-color kinda games like the kind that ran on Space Invaders hardware) didn’t really look like that at all.
I don’t understand where the idea came from that that’s what old games look like or why it’s this commonly accepted thing. Is it because it’s easy to sprite? Less pixels mean less work? I don’t get it.
I would honestly sprite more if I was just a tee bit better at it. But preach it man.
You know, maybe because not everyones a talanted artist, or maybe that was exactly the style they were going for.
But pixel art isn’t just a tool for making games look retro. It can have that effect, but that doesn’t mean thats what the artist wants.
Not everyone has to make pixel art a certain way, and if they want to do one pixel limbs, and boxy heads then thats fine.
and if this:
Is what you’re going to call generic
then maybe you should be a little more open with your standards.
or at least not bash people for using a style you don’t personally like.
Though if you want a more acute explanation, it’s probably a strive for minimalism, mixed with a reach for a kind of retro, but not entirely feel. It is actually less work, because it simplifies the amount of pixels you’re working with, which also makes animating the character easier, and allows for more varied and versatile animations with less work per frame.
the thing about pixel art is that people are taking advantage of it. people have been taking advantage of it for a long, long time now.
there’s no excuse for not being able to hire some kind of artist for your game. if you’re going out of your way to make a game, you should put as much effort and care into it as you possibly can. have passion for what you make.
that being said, indie games have been using really awful sprites for a long time now simply as an excuse to look “retro”. i don’t think this is fair. at all.
if retro games looked like this-
then how is it fair that indie games that look like this?
even the game you took an image from, superbrothers, doesn’t take advantage of pixel art as a medium. it uses pixel art as an aesthetic. there is a very large difference between the two, and one shows respect for the medium, and the other doesn’t.
why do you think there are entire communities dedicated to spriting? there are literally hundreds if not thousands of capable pixel artists (including OP and myself) who can make pixel art leaps and bounds better than most indie games.
one quote i really like and think about a lot is that people shouldn’t strive to make indie games; they should strive to make games. considering “indie games” as an idea are commonly attributed to games that use these ugly, low effort art styles, i can completely understand where the quote is coming from. i mean, hell, shovel knight looks great! so what’s everyone elses’ excuses?

Considering the core mechanic of FEZ is a 3D world represented in a 2D plane, I think that it’s minimalist approach and vibrant visuals fit it well and it feels great to play. FEZ took 5 years to develop and had a loan from both the Government and the Indie Game Fund, with a team of mainly 8 people and include such talent as Paul Robertson among them. FEZ’s level editor and game engine were made from scratch from the project by Renaud Bédard, and that is not common for many games, even AAA. Now Undertale, Undertale was made by a very very small team, talking like Toby Fox alone for 2.7 years, that grew larger thanks to a Kickstarter. Development for it literally started in Andrew Hussie’s basement. Now, Fox did have help on the art for Undertale from three artists and an animator, but was otherwise done by himself. And considering the budget for Undertale was $51,125 (met Goal in July of 2013) compared to the other titles listed in this post with budgets over “$200,000″ (Superbrothers Sword and Sworcery EP) and the game was created in GameMaker:Studio in just under 3 years, I think it speaks for itself. Yes, Shovel Knight does look good and it was developed under a $311,502 budget through Kickstarter by Yacht Club Games in “[thier] own custom c++ engine. It uses DirectX on PC and OpenGL on Mac+Linux”. Yacht Club Games is a company with many ex-WayForward developers that worked on previous titles such as Contra 4, A Boy and His Blob, Thor: God of Thunder, Mighty Milky Way, BloodRayne Betrayal, and Double Dragon Neon. This is in stark comparison with FEZ and Undertale, as both were first time games with very small teams. It makes sense that many of these Indie titles would take different approaches to their visuals to stand out while staying minimalist, to echo those above me, it’s a very cost effective direction and it’s making the most of each Pixel you have. I honestly think they are each appealing in their own way and make sense from a design stance as well considering the majority of titles listed here are Platformers and Side Scrollers, with Undertale being the odd one out that could easily be compared to EarthBound and older Pokemon visuals.
also I really want this to spread as much as possible
these are all characters from disney comics and I want this fanart to spread everywhere in hopes that maybe it’ll inspire someone at disney to include them in the new ducktales
so for once, I ask you, person reading this- consider reblogging, instead of just clicking like. Not demanding you do anything, just appealing to your powers of reblogging-ness. Et al.
