I've well and truly saved far too many bits to yap about and need to limit myself... it's so hard though... anyways, with how long the last few bits were, I'm gonna start another thread, though I think this still has some of p3v2... I've lost track, I should really go back to a larger number of smaller posts instead of fewer but longer ones... let's see how i do with containing myself 😅
For starters, an outsider's perspective on the infamous harspiel concert. I do enjoy seeing how Main Character Antics are perceived by others, and this is no exception. Especially since the sister of this POV character married into the (former) Veronica faction. We know full well that med- and laynobles get jerked around by the politics of archnobles and archdukes and can't behave too honestly to themselves.
So, even though I didn't include much from it, I really like seeing these sisters, who come of age during vastly different intraduchy political times, talking about how things were and how they've changed and their hopes that go counter to the politics they're playing.
It's okay, Effa, Ferdinand has (reluctantly) taken on the role of giving hugs. She'll wear him down over time. More or less.
"Surely Rihyarda's son is someone reliable"..... well.... yes.... but he's also one of Ferdinand's pet weirdos, so, y'know... Watch out.
Ferdinand is unintentionally one of the funniest motherfuckers around. "Fear not." Oh, she's gonna fear, and rightfully so XD
I go feral for this part aaaaaahhhhhhh the stark contrast of morals, both of them working to do the most good by their individual perspective, Ferdinand getting ready to teach Rozemyne how to plot like a noble, yessssss
Then another perspective on the Hasse situation, and Mark showing off his own dark side... Rozemyne really does have to come to accept that a level of ruthlessness is required to survive in this world
And more perspectives on Hasse. Rozemyne even recognizing that Ferdinand is doing her a huge favor by letting her take control of the situation and using it to teach her how this society works. The way resources are so scarce that they'd actually kinda rather have an excuse to kill 1000 people, but they're letting her save almost all of them. Just. Augh. I love the culture clash so much.
Lmao Ferdinand.... your Lord of Evil is showing... But also, I do like seeing our 'good guys' do things that we'd find morally reprehensible. It's a different world, a different time, with different needs, and different problems... so of course their morality is different as well. By their standards, they're being incredibly kind and soft, they ARE good guys, it's just that this world requires something different to be good for it.
And I appreciate that through all of this, as she struggles with it, Rozemyne DOES understand and accept that she can't just expect what she considers justice to be the same. It's the first time she's had to confront it in such a way, but she really does handle it like the mature adult she mentally is. It's not an easy thing to accept that your values don't mesh, no matter how you wish they would, and that she's the one who needs to step back because she's the outsider with limited understanding.
There's so much gold in this part of the story. Ferdinand being a touch too honest with Rozemyne, Roz using his disgust with Wilfried for everyone's benefit, Sylvester and Roz calling each other weirdos, Wilfried being too dense for his own good because he was never taught to look deeper than the surface, Roz scaring the crap out of Moritz....... there's so much deliciousness here X3
