I need to find a different comfort author than Hesse; whenever his protagonists feel trapped in life, they decide to change their surroundings and live a life true to themselves. And then they die immediately. Which is not exactly the outcome I aim for 😔

listen I get what you’re saying but this is Phantom of the Opera, a book in which yes, he very much does kill people, but it turns out he aches to be outright mundane and actively fantasizes about having a regular apartment and going to the park on Sundays, and also the author’s literal self-insert narrator character does in fact directly address the reader and go ‘this was society’s fault and you need to feel sorry for him because he would have been the greatest noblest man to ever live if people weren’t so mean to him’:
