Sooo…. I wrote the first chapter of my fic today.

It’s called Of Demeter because I like naming conventions and I think the harvest goddess of home is a good fit for a story from Chloe’s perspective

From what I can tell I’m the only of Poseidon Fanfic on Archive of our own, I’m also planning to post to fanfiction.net soon

I worked pretty hard on it and I’ll keep updating it as I finish new chapters, it’s going to be a crazy ride I think ^ ^

Syrenna headcannons Eyes: pigmentless like blue eyes but have a membrane that filters light and protects the eye that turns blue to purple. Ageing causes this membrane to thin and become damaged which explains why land dwelling Syrenna eventually develop blue eyes. This does not occur in half breeds as their membrane is at the back of the eye not the front and refracts purple light through the eyes. Teeth: syrena are not obligate carnivores but need some meat in their diets much like dogs. They have sharp ripping incisors and only a few molars. They are lactose intolerant and not as resistant to poisons like peppers and chocolate as humans and could die of an overdose very easily. While half breeds can survive on a human diet, they need plenty of eggs or fish to be healthy and can handle raw meat better than humans, they can eat poisons like us but have trouble with strong stuff like alcohol meaning they are famous light weights. Tails: syrena are mammals,  they closely resemble other sea mammals and have warm blood but have adapted more dramatically than other species. Their tails are different based on location and family and resemble other sea life as syrenna are natural mimics.  Like other sea creatures, they can breed in the water just fine but often don't due to land being safer and ancient traditions meant to give new mates privacy. When on land, many specialised traits are hidden as they have almost cuttlefishlike skin that changes dramatically upon transformation. As half breeds only have one form, they develope specialised traits all over their bodies after reaching maturity at 18 years old and will resemble humans less as they age. Half breeds have genitalia reminiscent of that of a human but most present as female since this is more in line with syrena dna. They have an odd chromosome count and as such cannot create viable gametes, there is no such thing as a quarter breed. Pigment: syrena produce a lot of menalin since water causes light to intensify in a magnifying way that could lead to burns without the protection, all syrenna have dark hair and skin within the range of olive to a deep black depending on how close to the surface they live and the general climate.  The largest syrenna city is deep under the Pacific ocean and so these syrena are on the paler end of the spectrum. The pigment gene in a syrenna and a human are placed in such a way that they cancel each other out, this means half breeds cannot make menalin and have a form of albinism. They burn easily and often develop vision problems. Sensing: sensing is how syrena find both each other and prey, like hammerhead sharks they sense electromagnetic pulses and all send out a unique signal for others to find. These pulses do not carry on land. The pull and sensing are not the same. They symbol of the trackers is a hammer in reference to the hammerhead shark. The pull: doesn't exist ^ ^ Gifts of the generals: poseidon could talk to animals and make them listen, this was due to his throat reverberating at a pitch hypnotic to most creatures that evolved to hear well in water and this allowed him to direct their actions. Triton had super speed and endurance and could displace water with such strength that it made the sea boil and become a storm. These are not the only gifts but are the most famous and impressive. Poseidon's gift is inheritable while triton is more like Usain bolt and training would also be needed. Blending: remember the cuttlefish skin? Yep, that's how blending works. Since half breeds lack transformative abilities, they cannot blend.

maybe not in the story but have some catfish half-sisters Vanora and Cordelia. They’re both of Triton and their parent had an affair on land when he was younger, Cordelia is his only family member that knows and really likes her big sister

some Emma doodles and related stuff. I’m playing with Poseidon and Triton designs as well as some Tartessos stuff including ancient half-breeds like these two. I’ve also decided that Poseidon house has the bottom half of a rough-toothed dolphin which leads to many of the half-breeds from this house developing dark grey speckling over the years after they come of age, they’re apparent by the time they turn 30 at the latest but may develop sooner in some cases (Emma doesn’t have hers yet because she is still quite young)

I like the idea of things being quite history oriented and having Emma see the ruins of tatessos one day, maybe with her mother, and eventually getting a tattoo of her house symbol the sea horse. I chose a sea horse because I looked up Poseidon imagery and aside from tridents there were horses which made no sense in an ocean context so I made it sea horses.

Overall I’m going for a stylized look for the half-breeds that makes them more than just pasty humans with super powers which seems a waste of potential, I may experiment even more with Triton half-breeds to show some differences between the houses. I also really want a nice historical portion of the story and some proper characterization for the generals because it sounds fun.

also: half-breeds are like half-donkey horses in the sense that they have an odd chromosome number because syrena and humans are different species of the same genus, this means all half breeds are infertile and this is another part of why they are really rare since quarter-breeds and such are impossible.

The royal twins, I’ll do some more of their water versions soon but I really like them being the same height and frame since their twins. I like toothy syrena ^ ^

Galen has boring tastes since he’s just trying to blend in but Rayna just wears what she wants which generally means a lot of mismatching dated clothing with a lot of bright colours.

more Chloe! As stated earlier I have no motivation to kill her off so instead she’ll have been hospitalized and loses the leg the shark bit into. At first I was thinking it may have been broken but I went back and read the description of what happened to the leg and decided she’d probably loose it. The leg you see in the picture is a running blade that’s good for exercising in, not sure what kind of budget you’d need to have one but I think she likely has a regular issue one too and I just really like running blades.

The attack still kicks off the story and Chloe’s injury and the time she’ll have to spend in physiotherapy and such will still matter but I think it’s best to keep her around especially since the group really needs a full human. 

Also I don’t think Chloe was ever given a surname so I’m giving her one, it’s Parker

This is basically how I imagined Chloe in my head when reading, I somehow missed that she had a weave and I’m glad I did because I prefer the sunny sporty girl with lovely curls I had in my head. This Chloe is still fashionable and extroverted with warm colours and a protective streak and is a textbook grifindoor personality which means brave and unable to stand aside when something she doesn’t agree with is happening but that she also rushes in a lot.

She will feature a lot on this blog because I like this Chloe and want to keep her around a while longer.

her favorite subjects are P.E, Philosophy/Social Science and Geography and she really hates cooking and Biology. She likes dogs and has a special interest in the archaeological sites in Denmark where all the bog bodies keep being found because of their unique ancient culture and a terrain that is good for preservation.

A note

so...this book. It has some major problems that I honestly hate but also a nice aesthetic at times and I love mermaid biology so I thought I’d go over this book and try my best to make a mixture of AU’s and headcannons with fanart which will hopefully extract the enjoyable bits from this train-wreck of a book.

will feature a lot more Chloe because I honestly don’t feel like killing her off and we need a sane person around to contextualize all the fucked stuff that happens in this book. Will also feature legit fish people mermaids and a bigger focus on Rayna and the struggles she faces. I’m also going to expand on Syrena evolution and history and the genetic ups and downs that come with being half-syrena and half human since these are clearly different species not subspecies.
