It doesn't smell of the familiar soap anymore. “Just a little more,” she promises. “We'll be… there soon, Ilyusha.” She wanted to say home. We'll be home soon, Ilyusha. But she stopped herself at the last second, because now, it seems, home is gone. At least the one they used to know.

— In 1996, Irina Rozanova packs her two sons' things into one bag and runs as fast as she can, as far away from Russia as possible. That, somehow, leads the three of them to Canada.

It all makes sense. Ilya has probably already reached out to the next person on his list — someone less boring, less demanding, more responsive to instructions. Obedient. Maybe untouched. Perhaps as inexperienced as Shane was in 2008. Someone good. After all, Shane has nothing left to offer anymore.

— The aftermath of their Las Vegas encounter leaves Shane struggling to stay afloat. Ilya isn't there to help. Another alternate version of what happens after s01e02.

“I want you to fuck me, Rozanov,” is the first thing Shane says as soon as the door closes behind him. “Hello to you too, Hollander. It’s good to see you. Want some coffee?”

— After a bad game, Shane seeks out Ilya to relieve some tension in a purely physical way. Or at least that's what he tells himself. It's not that he wants to be comforted. Definitely not.

Shane's accident isn't enough to stop Ilya from breaking up with him.

Hiiii, I found "where we are almost safe" on AO3 and saw that the last chapter update was chapter 5 on February 14th. I hope this is okay to ask, but could you tell me anything about where chapter 5 leaves us emotionally? I want to read your story but I'm feeling a little bit scared starting it without knowing where it leaves off, and not knowing if/when it will get new updates 👉👈 I'm sorry if my ask is offensive or stressful or unpleasant in any way, it's not my intention to bum you out or anything! I hope you understand 🥺🤍

Hi! It's totally fine to ask ♡

Emotionally, chapter 5 ends on a resolution of one small conflict, so it's quite a hopeful, soft moment. If nothing more comes out, I think it would be totally fine to just treat everything that's available in that fic as a small snapshot from baby Ilya's life. It's not emotionally wounding, that's for sure! No worries!

That being said, I plan to write more and update it during the summer, once I'm done with university stuff 🤗

if you don’t like a fic, and if you can’t suspend your belief enough to enjoy a fic that exaggerates or ignores real-world orgs, you don’t have to read it. you don’t have to screenshot it and put it on blast for twitter. you don’t have to post a link to it in the replies. the back button is literally there on your phone. it’s not giving baby’s first fandom anymore, it’s giving entitled asshole and it isn’t as cute as you think it is.

Chapter 5 is out 🦈

The days fly by in a flash. Ilya gets one demerit for not completing his summer reading assignments (he didn’t feel like it), and Shane gets three for constantly holding his pencil incorrectly (even though he’s been practicing). “Don’t worry,” Ilya whispers as the teacher’s warning turns into a scream. He gets a second demerit for that. He plans to get to four by the end of the first week. Just to beat Shane, no other reason.
