A Drawn to Stars anniversary thank-you

5 years ago today I started posting my first Sherlock fic on AO3. I’d spent years on it, and it had got long and prickly, so my hopes for it were modest. 30 or 50 readers would be a great success, I thought, and I still think that. The first 30-50 readers and their comments poured out generous encouragement and rowdy-shouty interaction. And they buttonholed their friends and made them do the same.

So I kept writing. If you watered the flowerbeds of Drawn to Stars, early or late–thank you. You midwifed every story that followed, whether in the DtS series or not.

Next in the series: Inferno, co-written with 7PercentSolution. Sherlock and John are lured into a case in Italy involving Roberto Zanardi, the Mafia, and stolen art. A lot will get resolved that needed to be resolved. The case fic, the brainchild of @7-percent, is riveting, and you can definitely read it without knowing the series.

We’ll post another WIP excerpt soon, as we're reaching the end of the writing. Look for the banner 😍 and let us know if we should tag you.

This month I’ll be reblogging some treasured posts about DtS because listing them here would be long and boastful. But I owe too much to too many people not to thank them again, starting with the Fic Writers' Retreat group and the sublime @hubblegleeflower.

Fanfic may not depend on readers and boisterous reception––or it may. If you love a story, let the writer know: if time is short, a string of emojis or a "sorry no time i love this story" is incredibly motivating.

Tagging in the notes a few of the DTS readers whose tumblr handles I know. But I love everybody in this bar, that’s all I’m saying.

In my imagination, they had to add that leaf to the top of the peach to stop drivers from running off the road in astonishment. And even then, drivers ran off the road in confusion about why a giant bum had leaves growing out of it.
