Hello y'all!

My name is Glyph, I'm in my 20s, pronouns are he/him. I'm from the USA. This is mostly a blog to talk about and organize my tomarry fic, along with additional harry potter blogging. I've been turning this over in my head for a couple years, but I've never gotten much further than a couple unconnected scenes. Hopefully, by writing things out and maybe interacting with some people, I can get some motivation to write out this whole thing. Also my blog title is from the automated url generator tumblr has when you sign up and I loved the feel of it. As an anthropologist I am a big fan of glyphs and they are indeed often fractured! Feel free to say hi or ask about the fic!

tbh im not entirely immune to a villain with a tragic backstory but i do think villain origins are a lot more interesting when the focus is less "here is the original sin, the first big bad thing that happened to them that made them who they are" and more "here is the first time a person who maybe otherwise felt powerless in their life realized that they could hurt someone and get away with it"

you can get a lot more mileage out of analyzing a truly abhorrent character through the lens of like. what sort of conditions would allow or even incentivize this kind of cruelty? what kind of person benefits from those conditions and how? over the more typical who hurt them type analysis. imo.

"what would make them do that?" expanded into things like "what did it feel like when they did that?" and "how did they feel after they did that?" and sort out the contradictions and show them getting rationalized away, pruned away, normalized away. "how did it feel to do this other, worse thing?" "was it a relief to figure out that loophole to avoid that part you were feeling bad about?" "was it nice to finally have permission?"

highly recommend: making that character’s mourning WORSE!!!! make them play pretend with that corpse. make it seem like they’re moving on until they start telling the new person to start dyeing their hair the color of the person they lost and start calling them their name to make it clear that they’re hanging out with this person now to try and make them into the old one. make your grieving character put people in the same situation the person they’re mourning died in and have them hope they die to prove it was unpreventable. make your grieving character put people in the same situation the person they’re mourning died in and have them hope they live to prove that it wasn’t doomed to happened. make your grieving characters actively harm the people around them and the memory of the person they lost. I love you morally dubious grieving characters

Just listened to Roses in December and yeah I Do think Harry would get the song for Tom

Seeing as I don't really have anyone to do writing sprints with, I think what I will start doing is writing sprints on my own, for 15 or 20 minutes at a time, and then I'll post my favorite sentence or so from that here. Starting tomorrow, hopefully, if I can get my linguistics paper written in time.
