HIdden trash!!! There is plastic everywhere!
week four round up! - HIDDEN TRASH!
When I started this journey I thought my biggest chore would be replacing bad habits and learning how to make stuff my self. BUT I am slowly realizing there is tons of hidden trash! Packaging, packaging, packaging!!!!I buy organic rice crackers... they come in a plastic package. I bought organic cake mix; recyclable cardboard on the outside.... plastic on the inside. I like to take EmergenceC during winter... plastic foil. Organic rice pancake...plastic.
In February I am going to change three things, for good. I think the easiest step will be toothpaste, tampons, making my own laundry detergent. We will see how that goes... hahaha! This is super hard, and totally worth it.
I eat a salad everyday, every other day I buy a plastic container that has salad in it so I throw over a 150 plastic boxes away every year just on my own... :(
The point!
Okay, so i finally got over myself and realized these embarrassing feelings the shame of how much trash I make is THE POINT. I know I was going to go one year just looking at my trash and finding alternatives but now I feel like I could start tomorrow. I guess people need to figure out what kind of person they are and want to be. Can you just snatch off the band-aid, dive in the pool or do you peel it off and dip one toe in the water.
I like to think I am a snatch off kinda girl and for a lot of things I am but the is hard.
How am I going to clean my floors?
What about cat food?
P.s I have an amazing cat name The Captain, she wonderful and I love her. The Captain is my best friend.
Next monday I am going to have a list of things to make and stop buying in February! Perhaps thats how I will do it! Each month take out something and replace it with something else! BOOM!!!! Done!
To much!
Its been almost two weeks since I last posted. Honestly, its been really hard for me to look at all the trash I make. I thought it would be easier when I got back to the city to make less trash. I don't eat out much, I am a vegetarian and I only eat organic. None of that MATTERS. Its the packaging on these things. Also things I didn't even think of are starting to pop up. Keeping it 100 I had my period last week... I change my tampon every 4-6 hrs and sleep in a pad.. Its made so much trash. The plastic tube, the plastic cover and then the tampon it’s self. Plus I ran out of some of my pressed power... I use Bobbie brown which is the best makeup for my skin tone but it comes in a plastic container. I did laundry and ran out of detergent... A huge bottle, thrown away. I ran out of toothpaste. I needed to Swifter my floors... Also my building doesn't have recycle. They just throw it all away. I am feeling super over whelmed. I feel super lost in my ability to find change and make it sustainable. :(
Week 1 Wrap Up
After one short week of collecting, photographing and journaling about my trash I really had to pause for a moment. Yesterday I detoxed and only had green juices I made at home. I can't believe in one week I made so much trash... How can I travel and create no waste. How can I live normally and create no waste... Its a actually stressing me out a bit. I don't know how I can keep looking at my trash and feeling over whelmed because I can't do anything. Its only been a week and I don't know if I can do this for a year AND CREATE NO TRASH in 2017. this seems like an impossible journey, with an unobtainable goal. How can I live in New York and create no wast. My building doesn't even have recycling! I talk the talk, I use only cruelty free products, I am a pescatarian, I go to the farmers market in Union sq on saturdays I recycle when I can, I NEVER liter. But now I need to truly walk the walk... I need to truly investigate how I can start making moves towards a completely green, no impact, no waste, no mark life style.
Hello Manhattan!!
Heading Home
I rounded up my trip with only eating out... Yesterday I woke up and ate at the Boulder City Diner and ate lunch at the airport at 2:00. My flight was originally supposed to take off at 2 and was pushed to 4… I ate dinner on the plane.
Ashamed
After I looked at the pictures from the day before, yesterday I only ate at restaurants. I didn’t stop at the gas station for goodies and soda, I didn’t do fast food.
But it’s not sustainable financially.
Breakfast: 17.89
Lunch: 14.17
Dinner: 28.93
Gas station food...
Grand Canyon
The trip from Utah to the Grand Canyon doesn't have many food options available... So I ate from a couple of gas stations along the way. Once I reached my hotel in the Grand Canyon I ate at the restaurant there.
Honestly I really can not come up with a solution for a road trip that generates no trash.
Waking up late....
Of course on my final day in Vegas, I wake up late! I am rushing to pack, check out, eat, find a taxi, get the rental car!! It was bananas. Soooo what do I do I grab McDonald's; not healthy and TONS of trash!
On the road to Utah I are three tacos and a burrito. For dinner I had a salad at a restaurant called... Wild Willies.
How do you travel, eat well and create no trash!
Styrofoam cups, plastic table liner, plastic bags, plastic gloves, roll of paper napkins... not great.
Hot and Juicy
Yesterday I ventured off the Las Vegas strip and found HOT and JUICY! It is local crawfish and seafood place. You are literally served from a huge plastic bag... I am a lot of trash from just eating. In New York I rarely eat out, so I'm sure that will change once I am back. But my question is how do you eat when you are away from you home?
I had a lot of coffee... Perhaps giving up sugar will not only be better for my health but also the earth.
Las Vegas
In the summer of 2015 I tried to go a month without making trash... I literally could not go a day.
Currently I am in Las Vegas baby!!!! My fiancé and I decided to come down for New Years Eve. Yesterday we were really tired so we stayed in, order room service and watched movies!! Still created trash. Some recyclable and I am not sure if the MGM Grand recycles the wast from rooms. I will ask when we check out tomorrow.
