Coreopsis leavenworthii is in the sunflower family Asteraceae. Commonly known as common tickseed, it was once thought to only be found in Florida, but reports of populations of this species have also come from Georgia and Alabama. Common tickseed is one of the most widespread species of Coreopsis in Florida where it inhabits areas with moist soils include savannas and pine flatwoods, as well as roadsides and disturbed areas. This species is an annual and can bloom throughout the year producing many seeds that will develop into new plants while the mother plant dies after flowering. The 13 species that comprise the genus Coreopsis are the official state flower of Florida.
