This isn't a criticism of the show, but a question I've had about the fandom for a while. Should the level of empathy we're expected to grant Jax be given to Jax's mother? Both of them hurt the people around them, neither of them changed, and they faced hardship in different but relatively relatable ways. Do any Jax fans feel empathy for her mother? If not, why?

Canon is what's in the actual work. Not what's implied. Not what the creator confirms on Twitter. Not what fans piece together from vague hints.

If Jax is trans… where is that in the show? We never see his IRL counterpart transition. We never hear him talk or think about his gender. We never even get a small, but unambiguous detail like a trans flag pin, a photo on his social media, anything that plainly communicates it. Everything that's used as evidence is deliberately vague.

"It's implied! You just need media literacy!" - media literacy also means recognizing the difference between subtext and text. If something is only implied, then by definition it's open to interpretation. That's what implication is, you can't simultaneously make something ambiguous and then insist there's only one correct reading.

Compare that to actual on screen representation: Ruby and Sapphire's wedding in "Steven Universe" wasn't implied - it happened on screen; their relationship wasn't left up to interpretation. Heck, even Zooble being trans isn't treated like some puzzle for the viewers to solve, so why is Jax?

Ambiguity has its place. People still debate what the spinning top means in "Inception". That's because the film intentionally leaves that question unanswered. But nobody debates that Cobb is a cis man, because the movie communicates that clearly.

If your goal is trans representation, why make your character's transness the one thing your audiences can debate?

the people who compare tadc to steven universe drive me absolutely insane. dude steven universe was (and still is!!) good because i don’t have to wade through the depths of rebecca sugar’s twitter account to fully understand the lore. i can just Watch The Show. ruby and sapphire’s relationship was Shown On Screen, unlike jax being trans, which was barely implied and only confirmed by some random twitter post gooseworx made. we got NOTHING about her being trans in the show

I’m being sooo inflammatory but do you think a child is allowed to be angry at their abusive parent for dying before they can confront them about their abuse? Or is that unfair because “they’re already dead”?

Idk I just think when an abuser kills themselves before anyone can actually confront them or punish them, and leaves their victims to deal with the fallout, that’s bad.

I just wanted them to have closure you know? I wanted Gangle to stand up for herself, I wanted Ragatha to be open about how Jax has hurt her. And it sucks that Jax dies and no one gets that. And they’re not allowed to be angry about it because “well she’s already dead”.

I have never been more frustrated over a Star Wars Book when its not the authors fault. Axel Greylark is literally Jax if he was written better. He's an asshole who blames the jedi for his father's death but instead of being really creepy and making misogynistic and transphobic remarks his inappropriate jokes are actually funny. Even better the characters actually call him out.

Even better he actually has a sympathetic backstory where he didn't cause his Dad to die the jedi pulled him away. Jax's backstory as a closeted Nonbinary person pissed me off even more. I was very insecure about myself but I didn't feel the need to be an abusive piece of shit about it. Axel has betrayed the group but its clear he's gonna have a good redemption story in future high republic books. Jax got forced pity and then died without even addressing his behaviour.

Zoraida Córdova please grab Gooseworx and fucking teach her how to write a sympathetic antagonistic figure.

I want to enjoy my niche interest but its just showing me further how much wasted potential and poor writing Jax had.

I don't watch Star Wars much or read any of their books, but I somehow completely understand your point here.

"Jax didn't get a funeral and instead they're laughing" DUDE HE GOT A PILLOW FORT AND IS STILL THERE. The reason Jax didn't get a funeral is because he's in the pillow fort, even if he's dead he's still semi there.

And the laughing (talking about the other characters having interactions after Jax abstracted) it was probably multiple days after his abstraction. They were laughing and having fun the immediate day after Kaufmo abstracted.

Also, what did you even want the characters to say?

Gangle "I liked how he always threatened me and blackmailed me"

Zooble "I liked how he bullied my partner and how he was always rude about my gender identity"

Ragatha "I liked how he put centipedes in my room knowing they're my only fear"

The only person who could possibly say something nice is Pomni.

it's so weird to me when fans act like the concept of accountability or apology is cringe. "LMAO you want this character to say sorry" yeah?? i do??

or at the very least, i want the narrative to frame their actions as bad. sure, not all people acknowledge their mistakes but when you're writing about things as serious as abuse, SA, war crimes, etc., you have to know how to handle these sensitive issues.

most of Jax's abuse is played off as a joke, despite Gangle admitting that she feels subhuman because of his torture. most of Catra's abuse is heavily romanticized, despite Adora literally having a panic attack at the thought of her.

and it's especially funny that unconditional love and forgiveness is not cringe to these people, but they draw the line at accountability. they'll watch countless scenes of characters going "it's okay that you tortured us all our lives, we love you now!" but they draw the line at a character saying sorry and taking accountability for their actions.

accountability is not cringe. apologizing for your actions is not cringe. self-awareness and self-improvement is not cringe.

These people not only think accountability is cringe, but they treat calling out someone's actions is the worst possible thing you could do if the perpetrator happens to be their most favorite person.

I think Jax stans have forgotten that holding someone you love accountable is prove you actually care about that person, so no, Ragatha was not wrong for lashing out at him.
