in lieu of the unfortunate amount of things I've come to know about that TERF show on HBO against my will, I'm coming out of my woodwork to say fuck JKR and fuck the HP fandom for actively funding anti trans legislations and atop that anti trans rhetoric across the world. Dear queer people and allies who are still clinging to Harry Potter,

You cannot be a trans ally if you still continue to indulge JKR. There is no separating art from artist when we know where her money is going. I do not care how much nostalgia you have for Harry Potter, because I have it too, and yet our trans sisters matter more than how attached you are to the Wizarding World.

It is not up to interpretation where JKR's money goes. It goes to fund anti trans campaigns. You cannot call yourself an ally if at this same time you are actually harming the community.

I swear, all the white people glaze of Europe (especially countries with barely any diversity like the Nordic countries and Italy) and Canada is just a white supremacist dogwhistle, I just can’t prove it yet. It’s always “Europe/Canada is so much better than the United States!” but never specifying WHY. I went on a trip to Canada once and it was TERRIFYING. I wasn’t even that racially conscious back then— hell, I was a conservative-leaning 14-year-old at the time, but it was readily apparent to me that there was not a single nonwhite person in most of the places we visited. FFS I live in Huntington Beach, the least diverse place in California and possibly the entire United States, and I could still clock that were far fewer nonwhite people than what I was used to. It felt like fucking Earth X from Peacemaker. Socialist policy is great and all, but can we make phasing out the racism our priority?

the situation with harry potter is kind of unprecedented in some ways imo because it is maybe the largest media franchise in history to be created & owned by a single person who still has direct creative control over it. who is also a billionaire with significant cultural/political influence. like the usual "no ethical consumption under capitalism" type excuses shatter on impact when the bigoted author in question is logging onto twitter every day saying explicitly that when you buy the tim hortons ravenclaw donut she is using your donut money to fund the genocide of trans people. like with big franchises usually there's at least a little more diffusion of responsibility than this

Ostensibly non-bigoted FNAF fans really don’t like it when I bring up that the series’ lore has increasingly taken inspiration from the Pizzagate conspiracy theory and they are quick to dismiss that as me being paranoid. Harry Potter (fans ignore the girls, and the fandom is intrinsically bigoted because of JKR), Sherlock, the MCU before Phase Three, many BL ships (BL itself generally isn’t diverse but has better fandoms than non-canon BL), and The Picture of Dorian Gray. I liked Brand New Day but the ramifications for X-Men in the MCU are already set in stone. Either they’ll be “going to far” and the Avengers fight them, or they’ll never fight at all because “when Jean did it she went too far” and they’ll instead debate Trask in the marketplace of ideas.
