OHHHH THAT THING, i know that thing! God this brings back a memory where I used to watch this show called Handy Manny and one of the tools the guy used was the spirit level. For some reason i had a huge dislike on the guy. Why? I genuinely do not know but i just remember giving him the thumbs down anytime i see him and since he’s the protagonist, that means almost all the time. I was pretty young when i watched that show so i dont have much memories about it but those two are the things i remembered, him using the spirit level and just hating the guy for some reason. Didn't expect to have a small nostalgia trip..

(Also does that mean Mephisto hates the spirit level? Why???? He seems to be the type to like it in my opinion)

also yes, it's like when cats just decide they hate something so so much for no reason (incidentally, wiz doesn't know what it is, alecto loves and cherishes it, and astaroth thinks it's just useful)

Fr though they're such an underrated pair like?? What I wouldn't give to be a fly on the wall when they were talking alone. I NEED to know exactly what kind of shared trauma they have

oh it's a Lot but i think both of them consider it more of the general weight of just. being a chronodae - it's like universal to the experience, yknow?

though there's definitely a kind of bound-by-bloodshed nature thanks to them both serving in sonno's court, even if neither really likes to think of it. i think i've mentioned this before but at the time they considered each other more co-workers, but i reckon in present day - in peaceful times - their dynamic almost takes on a sworn brothers nature?

with the particular flavour of: not emotionally super close, but have shared and will share things with each other that they wouldn't with any other soul - each holding a deep sense of loyal connection to the other, and not compatible enough personality-wise to spend too much time together, but mellow enough to occasionally have tea and tease each other when the opportunity arises

So between Barbaros and Mephisto, who's 'older'?

in past, when both had their full powers intact, they were considered the same 'age', though for different reasons! barbatos is capable of splitting and merging whole timelines accurately (as he does in jtta), while mephisto could destroy and reform an existing space in time to reality-breaking degrees - like two different sides of a coin; time strives for order (barbatos), but is ultimately built from chaos (mephisto)

in present, mephisto isn't really a chronodae anymore, having no powers at all - but i like to think, post-jtta, barbatos would gently tease mephisto about being his younger brother in the hierarchy

One thing I’ve always kind of wondered—is Mephisto still able to give our pact marks? He used to have with Solomon, obviously, so it’s more the question of if their relationship ever went to a point where he would want to make a pact again, would he be able to?

this is an interesting one! short answer: yes, in theory, but a hard maybe as to whether he'd actually do it

i've already established that mephisto lost his chronodaemonic (i.e. time-weaving) powers (literally 'burnt' out of him by sonno's security measures when he fell into the pit*), but he still has access to regular magic - and while his demon form is in tatters, he's still able to change into it, he just refuses to. similarly, mephisto should still be able to make pacts, but acts as if he can't

he IS capable of doing it - but, like his damaged demon form, the ability is corrupted. normally pact-making comes at no real cost (as long as the demon doesn't claim the soul), but were mephisto to try, it would be extremely painful for both parties

(to make it metaphorical: think of it like glass broken in a very specific way. it's still operational, but now there are sharp edges that are unavoidable if you want to use it)

honestly it's 50/50 whether either would even bring it up, even if they did get over their inability to admit what they actually want from each other. i think both would be afraid of asking for it - solomon because of the lingering uncertainty left by their initial separation, and mephisto because of the guilt from being the reason it happened. basically they both have hella commitment issues now

to cap all that off with a little bit of fluff, though: were they to make a pact anyway, mephisto's is the only one solomon lets stay on his skin

*to elaborate on this: sonno is powerful enough that his intent still permeates everything his power touches, even while he's in deep sleep - so even if he wasn't consciously aware of mephisto reaching the pit, the security measures respond as sonno would. thus mephisto gets his time powers burnt out of him because this is what sonno sees as his exceptional quality, but retains the normal demon powers because sonno sees those as mundane and not worth bothering with

(what gives him the ability to do that? chronodae hierarchy follows similar rules to the brothers' age order, and they're all working with the medium of time - and time will always listen to the 'elder')

the last time I cried this much over a piece of fiction was legitimately back when adventure time ended and I had been watching that show since I was 5 years old and this is more devastating than that. I am not joking !!! I am going to Find You and Get You !!!!!!

Jokes aside the chapter was phenomenal as always and the pacing was brilliant- such a great way to cap off the ending

ah at least you know now!! and ajhdsjk i feel like i've said this too much but it means so much to know i've managed to invoke Feelings.. as always thank you for keeping up with our sweet girl and for chatting with me here!!!!

as for mephisto ohh he misses that kiddo like a grandmother misses her grandkids. outside of the newspaper club that's his best friend (though to be fair, ik is many a being's best friend), so whenever he's idle he just bombards her with messages because he can't go bother the exchange students under their lunch tree anymore

sometimes he sits there under the tree on his own and 'broods' for a bit, but that generally only lasts for about half an hour before alecto finds him. one time levi joins him and they sit there in silence for a whole lunchtime

(side note i'm especially glad that the pacing worked out because that was my no.2 biggest issue after deciding what was actually going to happen! no. 3 was satan's poem, which took up a disproportionate amount of time for something that i completely spur-of-the-moment decided to include)

THOUGHT! What are the Newspaper Club up to in the past in Nightbringer?

oh good question!! it kinda depends, since previously in canon it was established the the rad already existed before the fall - but in nightbringer they retconned it so that it's proposed after the brothers already become demons.... the timeline is kinda messy, so i'll just be going with the nightbringer angle (since it also works better thematically)

so of course the newspaper club doesn't exist at this point! depending on how soon after the fall nightbringer takes place....

in the jtta timeline, sonno goes to sleep well before the brothers arrive in the devildom, so at this point our mephisto is either about to leave the devildom, or is already up in the human world with solomon. he won't have gone to the pit yet, since he befriends levi at a later point to get access to it. this is also before he meets the other club members, since astaroth only meets him after he emerges from the pit

wiz and alecto have been friends for a while, and are tentatively dating at this point - meanwhile, astaroth is acquainted with wiz and respects her as a mage, but doesn't know either of them particularly well. wiz is an apprentice to a cursebreaker and only just starting to get involved with witch magic, alecto's an underground competitive fighter to earn money, and astaroth's in loner mode and spends most of his time studying the sky

honestly, they don't have much to do as a group at this point in the timeline! mephisto is entirely separate from them, astaroth and the girls are barely distant friends - it's after mephisto's whole fall from grace that they start coming together. (astaroth brings mephisto to wiz to help him recover, since he knows she's good at magic, and alecto knows a great deal about patching people up)

out of them - astaroth is much the same as he appears in jtta, but a little ruder and more standoffish, plus a lot worse at talking to people. alecto is a lot rougher around the edges, as well as generally less confident; wiz is a little cockier and hasn't yet developed her love of big hats and wizard fashion

mephisto, predictably, is the most different. more subdued, seemingly constantly on edge, and has a lot less will of his own, still being used to taking orders at this point. if he's still in the devildom, he's very quiet and tends to skulk around, aware that he's not welcome under diavolo's rule - if he's already met solomon in the human world, he's starting to develop the sense of humour he has in jtta, but lacks much genuine energy
