Rules for taking care of your Sense of Purpose!!

⋯ Stop waiting for purpose to arrive and start building it. Purpose is not usually a sudden revelation. It is more often the accumulation of small, repeated experiences of meaning, the activity that makes time pass strangely, the problem that keeps pulling at you, the moment when someone tells you that what you did mattered. You find it by paying attention to what's already happening in small doses, not by sitting still and waiting for the calling to announce itself. Look at what you keep returning to. That's where the purpose is already gathering.

⋯ Separate meaning from productivity. A culture obsessed with output has convinced many people that their purpose must be measurable, scalable, and ideally monetizable. But meaning doesn't follow productivity metrics. The conversation that mattered, the meal you made for someone, the time you showed up for a person in a way they'll remember, none of those appear on a resume and all of them count. Don't reduce your search for purpose to a search for your most impressive contribution. Ask what makes you feel like your presence on any given day was worth something. That is closer to it.

⋯ Let your values lead the search. Purpose and values are in the same neighborhood. If you know what you actually care about, the purpose tends to find its expression in the vicinity. What kind of person do you want to be. What do you want to have contributed when you look back. What kind of problems do you actually find interesting enough to keep working on when the reward is unclear. Answer those questions honestly and you have a more useful map than any quiz designed to match your personality to a career path.

⋯ Accept that purpose evolves and let it. What was meaningful at twenty is not necessarily what is meaningful at thirty or forty, and treating an earlier version of purpose as a permanent commitment leads to spending years defending a direction that no longer fits. Purpose is allowed to change as you learn more about yourself, more about the world, more about what you can offer and what you want to give. The updating is not inconsistency. It is the natural evolution of someone who keeps growing instead of stopping at the first answer that felt right.
