The concept of Regulus breaking up with James because he can literally SEE him going off the deep end when Reggie’s involved. Like. Opposite sides of the war and all but it’s James’ 7th year and Regulus’ 6th and tensions are rising and Regulus is ALREADY involved with Voldemort and showing no signs of getting out of it (yet) and James finds this out and. Allows it. And he ACTIVELY hides it. Like he just KNOWS that his bf is doing all this evil shit and yet he can’t bring himself to do anything about it and regulus knows that eventually he’s gonna go too far and James will have to bend his morals. More and he can’t live with that so he just..lets him go.
James is a mess throughout the breakup and finds regulus several times and the VERY last time before they stop speaking he begs and pleads and in his incoherent sob filled rambling he offers to join Voldemort if that’s what it takes. He doesn’t mean it of course he doesn’t mean it but regulus knows then that he made the right choice and he makes sure not to make the mistake of giving James another chance to beg because he is. Selfish and he will fold eventually.
