Patron silver turned green after sitting on the shelf.
Patron silver turned green after sitting on the shelf. <!– SC_OFF –>

So I've had a bottle of Patron tequila for awhile now. It has been opened before and is about half full. However, the silver color has turned to a dull green color over time. Is this normal/is it still safe to consume? It has been stored in a dark, dry cabinet.

<!– SC_ON –> submitted by Source: reddit answers: a knowledgebase built on reddit

Can tarnished silver mirrors be restored using a electrochemical reaction?
Can tarnished silver mirrors be restored using a electrochemical reaction?
I have read that an electrolyte will carry the sulfur atoms from the silver to the aluminum enabling the reaction:
3 Ag₂S + 2 Al → 6 Ag + Al₂S₃ silver aluminum silver aluminum sulfide sulfide
I have also inferred that applying a voltage (and/or keeping more of the aluminum in close contact w/ the silver) will increase the current, accelerating the process.
Clarification on:
Is this feasable?
What is an appropriate electrolyte (that can be made from household materials)?
How will the unidentified protective coating over the silver interact with this plan?
Will the the sulfur leave a smelly stain?
If applying additional voltage to speed up the process:
Is the silver the cathode?
What are the reasonible margins for voltage and current?
notes/context:
I have a wall mirror >1m2 that has yellowed/tarnished severely, and the usual household assortment of aluminum foil, baking soda, table salt, vinegar, citrus fruit, an impure aqueous solution of CuCl₂ w/ low [Cl-] content, DC power supplies ranging from 2V to 80V DC, and (60/40) solder wire.
I am hoping to avoid sourcing a replacement glass of similar thickness.

TIL that actor James Doohan was shot six times on D-day after successfully leading his men through a minefield and killing two German snipers. One of the shots to the chest would have been fatal except he had a silver cigarette case there, given to him by his brother.
