So we're a little late because... well, because I forgot. But in my defense, some of these took a while. My brain is smooth, I'm sorry. But we are ending Monster March with a bang! Puppies, monsters, my first and favorite Primeval addition. And... a polecat. For April, in fact! It's a fun time, let's take a deeper look.
I put this one on my list during the whole 'we brought back 'dire wolves'' thing, and it's separate from the rest of the prehistorics because I wanted to do a Striped Wolf from Elder Scrolls Online. Which I think turned out nicely! But overall it's a reminder that dire wolves aren't just big grey wolves, they're a little... unique. They give wolf vibes. But at their hearts they're funky little dudes.
Legiana is another one of my favorite Monster Hunter designs, thus it's spot on the list, but getting the posing right for this one? Rough. I wanted both sides of the heat crest, both sides of the wings, and the tail fan... in a portrait page. I think this was the most references I had for one creature. I even had to watch a hunt to see that tail. But the end result was so worth it!
Among drawing a bunch of monsters, sometimes you've gotta take a break and have a nice, pretty dragonfly. This was great, nice and easy and still looking good. I used a red reference and a blue one, and I'm thinking of combining them for the final piece? A little red-purple-blue action? I'm just saying...
This is my absolute boy right here. My favorite media monster. The original spooky-creature-that-walks-on-it's-knuckles. Primeval is easily one of my favorite shows, and the future predator always stuck with me since I'm always a sucker for sound design. Scar is a character that I always thought up, but never actually drew, so here he is! I even used a figure I have of this creature so I could have a good reference.
Malzeno is another, objectively, very pretty monster. Even in its original form, I just love that shade of red-pink for those wings. But the Bloodening? Now that's my style. Dark, deep colors, and fancy smoky details? It's a lot of fun, and this one wasn't even too bad to do! My references were already perfect, which I always appreciate.
Regular nargacuga? A pretty sleek panther dragon. But red-hot poker flower nargacuga?? Look, ever since I learned about this flower (which Ethiopian wolves eat?? I found that so crazy), I've wanted to use it in designs. And this was perfect. Just look at that tail, practically begging to be turned into a red-hot poker flower. I almost switched out nargacuga for tobi on my list for space, but after this idea? Narga won, easily.
The first addition for Alien April! And it's... kinda fitting, somehow. I mean, ferrets and stuff might as well be a lil alien. But, in the interest of the list, this is just a little early for National Ferret Day. But still, I love how pretty the polecat is. Also! Polecat on a pole! I mean, I had to...
We're finally finishing the very detail-intensive Monster March... to head into the very marking-intensive Alien April. Spoiler alert, it's gonna be a bunch of Avatar creatures. Those movies are good for giving me more Pandora creatures, and... nope, that's all I really care about. I'm excited (I dread) to get into them!
