so obviously Bruce has internalized that he needs to be useful or needed in order to exist comfortably in a relationship and this is why he's pretty chill and normal and can have a good time when he goes out as a civilian with Tim and Steph and Cass because they let him feel useful by paying for things. Dick, however, in a mix of wanting to assert his independence and not feel like he's exploiting Bruce for his money, refuses to let Bruce pay for things and demand they just hang out, which worked fine when Dick was a kid and inherently needed Bruce and works so much less fine now that he's an adult and Bruce feels extremely awkward and uncomfortable not doing anything for Dick when they hang out, which Dick picks up on and tries to overcompensate for until they're both clawing up the walls trying and failing to make this a fun get together

I don't know if this was my idea or if I stole it from someone whom I no longer remember, but I like to imagine that Martin uses Jon as an audiobook during the eyepocalypse. It's just a lot of walking and that gets so very boring and they really need a distraction from all of The Horrors™️. "Hey Jon? Could you read me the Hobbit?" "Chapter 1: an unexpected party---" etc.
