It's so funny to me that for years people complained about the ending of Ruin and Rising, saying it's disappointing that Alina goes on to have a normal life, instead of being a queen, leader of the Grisha etc. Because it would've been so empowering to see a female character keep her power and become a ruler. (Even though Alina’s ending makes perfect sense for her character, and I will die on this hill).

Yet, when Zoya's story in KoS and RoW comes along, which is exactly that, it gets dragged because she's too powerful? What do you want then??

Tbh I suspect negative reactions to both have to do with male characters. Many people wanted Alina to become queen so she ends up with Nikolai. Similarly, the issue with Zoya becoming queen is that she does it own her own, not as Nikolai's queen because he abdicates. There's nothing wrong with stanning male characters and Nikolai is amazing, but why does it have to be at the expense of female characters.

Also, Nikolai's entire arc in RoW is realising he doesn't want to be king. He wants to help his country and thought being the monarch is the way to do it, that it's his purpose. Then it makes him totally miserable, he’s much happier inventing things and not carrying the burden of the crown, Besides, he's literally the #1 Zoya stan, do you think he’d stand for y'all slandering her??? NO.

The problem with trying to write fanfiction about Thai shows whilst simultaneously learning Thai is the realization of just how difficult it is to translate languages. There’s a whole layer of the Thai language that just isn’t possible to translate: “Khrap” and “Kha”(”Khrap” is for men, “Kha” is for women, and they’re used in the same way). They’re both words that are indicators of respect that you use after some words when speaking. How often you use them indicates how much you respect the person you’re speaking to, and there’s just no way to communicate that in English. The best I can do is use “sir” and “ma’am”, but it still doesn’t quite work. Also there’s all the different ways to say “I” and “you”. There are respectful ways and non respectful ways, and how you use them changes the tone of the conversation. For instance, any time Phupha is being serious/gentle with Tian, he uses the respectful words, but in regular speech he doesn’t. The point is to communicate emotion about what’s happening. Again, no way to do that in English.

The point is I have a lot more respect for translators now and it’s deeply difficult to not use Thai words in my fanfic.
