It was cold.
That was her first thought when her eyes fluttered open, watching her breath rise in the half-light. Her next, when she stretched a little, felt the cold nip at her toes as they peeked out from beneath the furs, and reached out her hand to find only empty space where Fel was supposed to be, was fuck.
She didn’t even bother to say his name – she knew that he was gone.
She sat up with a jolt, regretting the rapid motion as the furs slipped off her bare shoulders and left her shivering. She looked to the fire in the hearth, burned to cinders, and slipped out of bed to dress.
She checked the shelves – the piles of books that they’d gathered in the ruins they’d searched, gone. She checked her bag – the maps that she’d marked, the scratchings she’d taken, gone. Even the cupboard – half the rations that they’d procured, the salt and the dried meat and the wrapped bread, were gone. Though, she supposed she should be grateful he’d left half.
Inara went to the door – the snow was falling rapidly outside, and there were no footsteps of any kind left behind, either because he’d been gone some time, or because he’d been careful not to leave any. Either way, tracking the elf in the forests he’d basically led her by the hand through wasn’t an option. She closed the door and cursed beneath her breath.
That’s when she saw it, sitting there on the table like it was left for her to find. She moved over, took the ancient glass between her fingers and twisted it, looked through it in the light that filtered through the hut’s one, dense glass window, and sighed. It was beautiful, really, its age apparent. She remembered the first time he’d handed it to her, too, there in the forest with her wound oozing poison. It had contained the stuff that had saved her life, whatever that was.
She sighed.
She tucked the vial away, and moved to stoke the fire. She thought of Felassan, and hoped quietly that he was somewhere warm.

I don’t understand my own feelings sometimes like idk I love all my friends so, so much and that post about loving your friends platonically hit rather close to home because like I really love you guys that much and I can’t figure out all this nonsense about different kinds of love or whatever because my hugs are like my version of a kiss or something in love intensity and I wanna hug the fuck out of you guys I’m sorry if that’s weird but whatever. Just because I have a girlfriend now doesn’t change this. Gomen bae. But still…
