Something I already love about Nightreign is its potential for subversion of familiar theme in the base Elden Ring. For example, "Priestess" feels similar to Melina in the concept, right? A "maiden" Fromsoft archetype that was set up as the chosen one to sacrifice for the sake of the world and who accepts the tragic burden and basically, a guy who disrespects her agency and fucks with the [insert evil power rotted in despair] to save her anyway is the asshole here, right...? Wrong!!
The way I see it, it even has several layers of subverting Melina's point as a character. Duchess starts to hesitate when Wylder's life is at risk, not excluded that Ironeye's fate might make her hesitate either. Duchess is as present amongst the 'Condemned' as her allies, implying she gave into the Night several times and still being here is owed to the convenience of the """master""" severing the corrupt part from the whole person like a tumour and making it all feel like a nightmare. Her having the Firekeeper's mask might be thematically appropriate, because Fromsoft doesn't fuck up even with their just-references. Notice how her eyes are only open in the Darkness outfit, which are strongly implied to reflect Nightfarers after giving into the Night! Who is to tell that letting the Erdtree grow anew in this setting is not the happy end but, in fact, is barely different from linking the Flame again? The Night's tide is also a bit different from Frenzied Flame; although also being the power that makes all things equal, also being feared as enemy of life and world, also taking roots from an Outer God and also being connected with intense negative emotions... this same rain doesn't hurt those who accepted it. Rather than destruction of all life and melting it back into One Great, it unites people in a different way. You become part of the Night, losing something by letting it into your heart (and having your "shadow" consumed?), but you are part of the whole without actually disappearing.
Not even to mention how the whole Roundtable thing might turn out to be a bullshit, should the DLC reveal more! Cutting tribe that tried to stop the impending Night saw "Erdtree's sin", and their reaction was to... conceal it? In pursuit of "redemption" for the crime of knowing it? To the point they even sealed their youth underground (check Cord End description, unique item in Nightreign)? No, it is possible that the horror caused reverse effect to righteous wrath, but what if this is not what happened? What if the timeloop the Roundtable is stuck at even IF you defeat the Nightlord is fully deliberate within the lore? Fromsoft is infamous to justify the unavoidable gameplay mechanics within the lore, and replayability would be no different from checkpoints, character being immortal, etc. So they faked this legend like "Roundtable exists to stop the Night 🥺" and in the DLC we learn that, surprise, the Roundtable actually exists so the Night can NOT be over. That seeing the Erdtree grow back is nothing but a daydream. That only part of the Wylder became one with Heolstor and the rest got spat back (again, like how it happens with the Condemned). That only the inner baby of 'the Gnawling' found its comfort but by now the Night is the force of nature way outside its misery so it doesn't change anything. Heck, Dawn outfits imply blessing of the Grace as reward for the good job, and you know who strangely has Dawn skin just like others? Fuckin Duchess. The one that was promised to get nuked when the Night is over. So, they have a dream of a good ending basked in gold, but they will forget about it. Why would not they?
After all, even though the Night tries to embrace all eventually, in general it seems to target the Erdtree, possibly because of Heolstor's own wrath. So, people from the tribe, that saw Erdtree's "sin", secretly sided with the Night and fooled everyone... Like, I am sooooo ready for them to do a Dark Souls but even more entertaining you have no idea.
@et--circenses liked for a thing from the 2015 character playlist so here is "say something" by a great big world ft. christina aguilera for madge undersee!!! this was a staple on my dean winchester playlists.
after the war was over, the wounds were tended, and the bodies buried, twelve was in shambles. an aching, desolate mess. nine-hundred and fifteen people were saved by the heroic actions of not only gale but a few others in twelve, and now, twelve was populated with far less.
the seam aches to get back on their feet. to rebuild what was lost in the rubble and start something new. something better.
gale's avoided it now for as long as he possibly could. his mother, younger brothers, and even his sister had been back in twelve for a couple months now, but gale had gone onward (ever a soldier) elsewhere to continue to work to provide for his family. as much as he could.
now, he stands in the middle of the once-familiar street, rubble cleared away but the constant sheen of black dust on everything remains. he doesn't know how long he's been standing here, but when he had first stopped, the sun was still in the sky.
he's been aware for a bit, though, that someone has been watching him. he's afraid of who it might be, honestly. he's never been one to run from his fears, though, so he turns around to see madge undersee there, fiddling with her fingers, her dress worn and faded, with that same black sheen that the people of the seam tend to never actually see.
it glitters beautifully in the moonlight, though, all around them, and it's this moment that gale realizes tears have been streaming down his cheeks, but it's obvious madge doesn't quite know what to say---nor does he.
"say something..." he finally says softly. it's not harsh. it's not mean nor does have any bite to it. it's a plea. he's heard it all, good and bad, in the short time that he's been back. he has no idea how madge feels about what happened... about what he did and so, the anxiety remains.
An uneasy tension settled over the group; no one was quite sure what to say or do. The portal behind the wolf was forgotten— a foolish mistake.
A red blur leapt through; white fangs glinted wickedly before sinking into Wulf’s flesh. The attacking she-wolf aimed to bite the male in half. Wulf’s roar of pain rattled the tiny cottage, he all but tossed Rebecca towards Ingall out of the she-wolf reach. He shifted as he fell forward, shaking the female off. Blood poured from his wound, slicking the floor, as he rounded on the red wolf lunging at her throat.
The she-wolf moved to counter but lost her footing, which inadvertently spared her life. Wulf’s teeth snapped shut on nothingness.
“Frigg,” Wulf snarled, “go back now, or I will kill you.”
“I like my odds,” Frigg growled, “only one of us is injured. I can rip your throat out before you can pin me with your weight.”
“You may be faster than me, but you’re outnumbered without room to move,” Wulf shot back darkly, his wounds already healed, “leave now before I change my mind.”
“You killed Modí! Like hell am I leaving without you dead at my feet,” Frigg raged, attempting to attack Wulf again. Without the element of surprise, she wasn’t much trouble for the large male. He easily tossed her to the foot of the portal.
“I didn’t kill your brother. That fool killed himself when he didn’t heed the giant’s warning,” Wulf stalked towards her, backing her through the portal. It slammed shut just shy of their still barred fangs as Ingall broke from his shocked stupor and shut off the device.
Wulf shifted with a bone-weary sight and looked at the floor and broken furniture with a frown. He grabbed the clothes Rebecca had washed for him and began cleaning the blood off the floor, and he wasn’t about to dirty something of hers.
The others had reacted defensively, Yurei grabbing the boy to safety, Barriers and bones leaping between the spectators. Kit bristled standing between the lot flames licking at her fingers ready to stomp down both wolves if Ingall hadn't managed to close the portal away.
Rebecca sat gasping in shock on the floor "W-what?" she stammered weakly trying to stand before collapsing back down with a pained gasp hand going to her side where a wicked fang had grazed her side when the red wolf lunged at Wulf as she clung to his side.
"Rebecca!" Kit called out kneeling beside the woman. "Mom? MOM!" Jacob cried out panicked from the skeleton's arms who had enough sense to keep him from seeing her injuried.
