One thing that I don't understand is that why, if we are on the Moon arc we got the Sun symbolism (reversed, but the meaning is still positive) during chapter 125 that is part of said Moon arc? Does it have something to do with Touka being one of the few characters associated with the Sun or something?

That’s a great question! I actually don’t know that Touka is associated with the sun at all–at least not prior to 125! But there are several possible explanations.

I’ve seen several people suggest that this is actually a 16 and a reference to the Tower–we did then get a lot of tower symbolism in the 24th raid arc, with a chapter even being called “fall from the tower.” However, I’m not sure the 16 best fits the meaning of the scene.

19 seems to fit best to me, and also there’s the fact that the word for 19 is apparently a pun on “orgasm” In Japanese sooooo. Lol. 

But here’s the thing about tarot numbers in TG: as previously described with the Tower symbolism in the 24th ward raid arc, and as seen in the most recent chapter with a 4, The Emperor, in Mutsuki’s kagune…

… there are references to the various cards throughout the journey, even if we haven’t reached that part of the journey yet, or have already passed that part of the journey (as the Tower Arc=Rose Arc). So yes, I lean towards saying that’s a 19, and is symbolic of the hope and light Kaneki feels after consummating his love with Touka. But. I don’t think that necessarily means that we’re in the Sun Arc.

The Moon Arc is an arc of stagnation (hence why it’s lasted so long) and also one of illusions. The idea that Touka having sex with him saved Kaneki and the idea that this love would be all he needed ignores the fact that every single character we’ve seen who clings to the love of just one person has met disaster in this arc. The narrative did seem to be illusionary in that it didn’t seem to be warning us that things were wrong–there were clues, which I’ve discussed before (like Kaneki not being forthcoming with Touka about his aging, rubbing his chin in various conversations, and Touka not confronting Kaneki over the Yoriko disaster), but they weren’t the most obvious things and I admit to even thinking myself that we were going to get a simplified ending. But instead Kaneki returns and becomes Dragon–which I really don’t think would have happened if we were past the Sun Arc. So when everything looks so sunny right now but characters are still obviously lying and delusional–not just Mutsuki, but Urie, who is prioritizing the CCG over family yet again, Touka, Saiko, Tsukiyama, Hide, etc. Ui grows quite a bit, but he still lies to cover up for Hirako, suggesting he is not ready to face the truth just yet, and the truth would come with the Sun Arc.

So, for the Moon Arc, we’ve gone through: Clown Raid, during which out characters (Urie, Mutsuki, Kaneki, etc.) begin their spirals, the respite (125-26), the 24th Ward Raid in which things get even darker, another respite (everyone joining together), and now shit hitting the fan again and in which the characters are reaching the defining points of their spirals–the turn or die moments. Are the Qs going to look at their flaws and grow? What is Kaneki going to do when he’s out of Dragon? Or are they going to face tragic ends?

Because the Moon Arc is an illusion, I don’t believe they are going to get tragic endings. Not the Quinx, not Kaneki, not Touka, not the other Aces. The Sun Arc really does feel just around the corner, impending even. It’s raining right now in Tokyo, but yes, I do think Ishida is meta enough to have to sun come out when we enter the sun arc. 

And the thing about the sun is that you can only see your shadow when the sun comes out. And remember, TG is very very Jungian, and the shadow in Jungian terms is the part of oneself that one would rather not face, but has to face in order to grow. Your flaws, to an extent. 

Which the Qs just so happen to embody. 

It’s noted here that:

The Sun is an image of optimism and fulfilment, the dawn that follows the darkest night. As the source of all life on earth, the Sun represents the source of life itself. 

I think Chapter 125 definitely wasn’t the Sun Arc, because things just got worse lol. But Touka is a part of Kaneki’s sun for sure, like all the Aces. I think it’s foreshadowing that she’ll play an important role. The darkest night sounds like where we are right now. Things really can’t get much worse. Kaneki’s literally a worm eating Tokyo–the only way they can get worse is if he lashes out once he’s out of Dragon (entirely possible, but it won’t be long or drawn out, I really don’t think so, if that happens). 

The Sun Arc sounds like what’s going to happen when Kaneki faces his shadow in the Qs (maybe with the Aces given the 19 tie to Touka and the light/shadow thing).

If I may, I will say that I wonder if the “source of life” imagery with the Sun might tie into what we know about Dragon’s possibilities, but I’m not going to speculate too much about that here.

Yeah, I hate to say it, but I’ve gotta agree that that definitely *sounds* like abuse. I’ve been in a situation like that before, and it was NOT GREAT. I got out though and I learned a lot from it so it’s fine!! This is about you anyways. If thinking of that relationship as abusive isn’t something that works for you yet, just, y’know, maybe start considering that it might not have been entirely your fault!

(Ooc: so, /perhaps/ Dusk might have some not great stuff that’s happened to them that they don’t actually count as trauma (which may not be a good way to think about it…) I couldn’t decide exactly what to put them in the trauma blender with, but I’ve got ideas now and I haven’t done it in this way before so that’ll be fun)
