Getting angry about Laura again couldn’t help – Vicki struggled with it, for a long few moments. Then, deliberately putting it aside, she returned to her practical objections. “I’ve only ever been a teacher and tutor. I can’t be either if I marry you, and I doubt Mrs. Stoddard would even give me a reference if I did.” “You won’t need to work.” “I’ve been here a year and I couldn’t even buy a twenty year-old car without help. You can buy Collinwood a dozen times over, can’t you? – but you’re still on the phone before dawn.” “Are you calling me greedy, little Miss Governess?” She smiled in the dark despite herself. “I’m saying I’ve never not had work, or school. I think I’d be bored. I don’t know what really wealthy women do, or what you want your wife to do. Or –” picking at something she’d overheard him say once, “– what help I’m supposed to be to your dynasty-building. I’m not a Collins, and I’m certainly not a Bouvier.” “Luckily, I’m not running for office.” “I wouldn’t vote for you, anyway.” It wasn’t a nice thing to say. She almost regretted it, but Burke laughed as soon as she said it – not the stagey laugh she hated, either.
