sweat    glistens    against    cold    skin,    shivers    running    down    his    spine.   dreams,    nightmares    did    not    often    plague    his    mind    and    yet    he    had    shot    up    from    the    bed    ready    to    defend    both    himself    and    rose    from    whatever    threat    was    coming.    but    the    only    threat     was    from    his    mind.    both    hands    lift    to    rub    at    tired    eyes    as    though    he    might    be    able    to    wipe    away     the    scene    that    played    on    a    loop    behind    his    eyelids.    flinching    away    from    her    touch,    breath    still    laboured,    feeling    as    though    he    is    underwater.    swallowing     hard,    fingers    curl     into    fists,    still    resting    against    his    face.    “    i     know.    ”    but    did    he   ?    the    dream    had    felt    just     as     real    as    her    voice    whispering    to    him   in    the    dark    now.    “    it’s   okay.   i’m    okay.    i’m    sorry    to   have    woken    you.    ”
