Why I Love It: I’ve said this before, but AU’s are my absolute favorite. They give the writer so much room to play. College AUs are my new favorite flavor of alternate universe fics. There’s the playfulness (and naivete) of youth to play with and the possibilities are endless. Here, Attuma is smitten, being himself, indifferent to the gaggle of young women vying for his attention when a certain hard-to-get Okoye is doing everything she can to resist his charms. The thing is, he’s such a sweetheart as written here and Okoye can sense this. But some nugget of a distorted truth about Attuma’s playboy nature has her hesitant to trust him. It’s such a cute dance they’re doing around one another, especially because, despite herself, the more she gets to know him, the more she likes what she discovers. And I just love reading their interactions with one another. Written so well it feels like the writer is penning episodics for a rom com TV series we'd run to catch after school ala those CW joints some of us were obsessed with in our youth back when it was the WB, black af and worth tuning in. Each chapter is an episode that pushes our favorites toward each other only to yank them back apart again. We're being edged but it's so much fun!

In all my time as a teacher, I never thought I would be so disrespected.

A student in my class had suddenly become upset for a reason he didn’t tell me, and decided that he would lead some sort of a rebellion with the class against me. He must have mumbled something in Spanish to the other kids but he told them to all ignore me for the rest of class otherwise he would start hurling insults and say mean words to them. The entire rest of the class, I knew something was wrong because of how cold and quiet it was but I could not figure out what was wrong. It wasn’t until the end of class that some girls came up to me to tell me how he and another boy had orchestrated the whole thing.

I couldn’t hold back my emotions and frustrations of how hard I’ve worked for this group. I spend hours in lesson prepping and every day I’m racking my brains and using my creativity to come up with interesting games and activities for them to play. So to hear them decide that they weren’t going to participate but also that they were going to stop others from learning as well? Absolutely unacceptable.

I had prepared a whole speech and wrote down what I was going to say to the students the next day and every time I remembered how they acted the previous day my emotions would well up again and again. I prayed and did my QTs gathering up my patience and love so that I could speak to them from my heart. I remembered that God has given me so many second chances where time and time again I’ve failed to come back to Him or turn to him for help yet He still welcomed me with open arms. I want to do the same for these kids and I couldn’t have done so without the strength from Jesus.

I want to say they saw my genuinity. That at the end of the day, I care about each of them and their progress at school and I hope that’s the message that stays with them. But after my talk, their attitude had a drastic change. Maybe it helped that we cleared out their folders of old assignments so there was this symbolic cleansing, but for the rest of the class, they were enthusiastic about the activity, and they even clapped and eagerly listened for the daily announcements that I had thought they considered boring! They’re really an adorable bunch and I feel energized when I see them enjoying their learning and getting along well with each other.

Being a teacher is the most unthanked job there is. I might never get to see the impact that I’ve made on these kids’ lives but I continue hoping that I can bring a little bit of joy to their day every day.

Chance Encounter

Aggrieved mandatory attendance at a friend’s party turns into an exhilarating chance encounter.

Stunned is a complete understatement. You have no idea how you got to this moment. 

Standing in the corner, being the awkward little wallflower you always are whenever there’s more than one other person around, you hear it from across the room, above the din of small talk and music softly playing in the background. Power and grit coated in honey steeped in a deep drawl, his voice is a lethal weapon. 

He laughs, head tilting in your direction, catching you staring. The leisurely way he abandons the group around him to stalk in your direction—it certainly feels like stalking—coupled with that cocksure smile, warns you he knows exactly how to disarm his prey. 

You’d never considered yourself prey, but damn if you don’t feel like it now. Trapped by a large hand flattened against the wall by your head, lanky body close but not touching, drugged by the scent of him. He smells good …really …fucking …gooood. Helpless to do anything but stare into gorgeous, deep-set eyes, topped by those thick, bushy brows and framed with dark, feathery lashes. What you wouldn’t give to have lashes like ... 

“You with me, darlin’?”

Gaze dropping to focus on luscious pink lips that you spontaneously have the urge to turn ruddy by biting; all you can do is nod. The pad of his thumb presses into the cleft just below your bottom lip. “Let me hear that pretty voice.” 

The long tattooed fingers curled beneath your chin force your head back until you have no choice but to lock eyes with him and stutter, “Am …you …w-with …I-” 

He chuckles low and deep, and you swear you can feel it resonate in the marrow of your bones, setting off the metronome of your pulse, the tempo building with each inhale. The arched brow and knowing look make you squeak. “Y-yes, Sir.”

“Good girl.”
