Gaynes Park, nr. Epping, Essex; 8.9.2012. The plume of smoke is from a fire at Herne Hill in South-East London (BBC news report). This is about 19 miles away from the spot I was standing, in a field near Gaynes Park, east of Epping. I can’t decide if 19 miles is near or far. In some ways it’s quite a small distance, but in London terms it’s huge, because if you live in London it becomes almost a universe in itself, so that Epping Forest and Herne Hill seem worlds apart.
