You know how as kids we were warned against eating too many sugary treats? We were told that doing so will lead to major health problems, such as cavities, obesity, and diabetes.
Well, did you know that the Bible also warns us against this, but not on a physical, but spiritual level?
The Bible warns us against pursuing anything unrighteous and sinful in the eyes of the Lord. It warns that doing so will lead to death and destruction for the unfortunate souls committing these acts. These can be compared to the sugary sweets and candies we are told to stay away from.
Instead, the Bible instructs us to practice righteousness, love, gratitude, and service towards one another in loving humility. This is righteous in God’s eyes, as it reflects his character and the story of Jesus. These acts can be compared to healthy food that we were told eat, instead of candy and junk food.
Imitating Christ and his character is the way we participate in the spiritual diet that we are all called to. Instead of gorging ourselves on the temporary sweetness of unrighteous, we are called to self discipline and consume only what is good, that being the word of God.
Being in good physical health is of some benefit to us, but being in good spiritual health will benefit us in every way. It’ll pave the way into eternal life and help shine brightly in this world of darkness, leading others to Christ.
Paul explains this in 1 Timothy 4:8, saying, “for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come”.
Living in line with God’s word will not only save our lives, but the lives of those around us. However, it also works the opposite way.
When we indulge in the sugary sweetness of sin, we affect our lives as well as those around us. Our light goes dim, and we fail to be a beacon to those around us. We become unable to bring others to Christ, since we ourselves aren’t living like we follow him.
This is why God gave us his perfect word and his perfect son, Jesus.
The word is God’s diet plan for us, and Jesus is example of which we must follow. Jesus lived out God’s plan in a way that only one without sin can. He also payed the ultimate price for us to receive the gift of his Father’s grace and forgiveness.
Unlike Jesus, we will all fall into temptation, and seek a bite of treats we know aren’t good for us. We are unable to stick to this diet plan perfectly, but God already thought of that.
It’s through faith in his son, and the grace Jesus secured for us on the cross, that we are made righteous before the Father. It’s because of the one who is perfect that we can become perfect.
It’s through his life that we learn how to stick to this spiritual diet, and gain motivation and help in doing so. It’s by Jesus’ example that we can become spiritually healthy and active.
This helps our lights grow brighter as our will to practice self control grows stronger. That’s the beauty of this diet, the more we stick to it, the less appetizing this world becomes, and we long for the day that we can follow this diet perfectly.
But right now, sticking to it the best we can is enough, thanks to Jesus and his self giving sacrifice on our behalf. As we follow the will of God and stick to this regimen, we slowly become more and more the masterpieces that Jesus designed for us to be since before the world began.
God bless, Jesus loves you ✝️❤️
