When you first met Echo, he had just been promoted to the 501st and was out celebrating with his brothers.
Your friends had dragged you out of the comfort of your own home, something about 'challenging your fears' or whatever. You hated it.
You were barely two drinks in and only slightly tipsy, when your friends got so drunk they forgot about you. This ended with you standing in a dark corner of the room, waiting for one of them to take a break from dancing with clones, so you could tell them you'd leave without causing a panic.
"Enjoying the party?" a voice shared among thousands of men asked, as an almost shiny white armor appeared and obstructed your view of the dance floor. The only thing making him stand out from the rest, was the blue handprint resting on his chest.
With an annoyed smirk on your face, you raised your glass at the clone. "Yea, having the time of my life, can't you see?" You replied, voice dripping with sarcasm.
If the clone picked up on it, he didn't let it show. "Yea I figured as much, with how you're standing in a corner to yourself, constantly eyeing the dancefloor and then the exit. Waiting for someone?"
At this, you raised a questioning eyebrow. "How long have you been watching me to notice that?"
The clone took a deep inhale and glanced to the side, before leaning confidently against the wall, clearing your view of the dance floor once more. "Not that long. Wanna leave?"
The song playing was reaching it's end, giving you a small window in the hopes of catching your friends attention. "Yes. I just need to let my friends know so they don't freak out."
"Sounds good, need help?" the clone replied and looked out at the ocean of dancing people.
You didn't get to reply as the song finally stopped and one of your friends who had been dancing with another clone, turned to face you with two thumbs up and a huge smile plastered on their face.
You returned the thumbs up, then twisted your hand to point at the door with your thumb, letting them know you were leaving.
"No need." You finally replied, short and simple as you quickly made your way out of the hell hole that was a social gathering.
The second you stepped outside, your muscles began relaxing and you felt like you could properly breathe again. You leaned against the outside wall cornering from the building, semi hiding you from the drunks slipping in and out of the bar.
It wasn't like the synthetic air of Coruscants lower levels were that much more pleasant to breathe in than the one in the bar, but out there you didn't feel as trapped or tense and you could actually let air properly fill your lungs.
"Erm... Everything alright?" The clone asked, making you jump in surprise. You had been so set on leaving the place, you hadn't realize when he asked if you wanted to leave, he meant with him. And the way you were breathing heavily, it probably looked like you had just run a marathon.
You were going to reply, but couldn't get a word out inbetween breaths. Instead, you just closed your eyes and nodded, struggling to keep your breathing even.
As if a lightbulb suddenly turned on in the clones head, he quickly caught onto what was happening. He got in front of you and grabbed your shoulder with one hand, forcing you to stand upright against the wall.
This caused you to tense up again, but the clone didn't let go of his grib. "It's okay, I'm just supporting you. I'm not gonna hurt you. Do you think you can open your eyes again?" The tone of his voice was gentle, yet commanding.
You managed to open your eyes, though struggled to keep them open from the tears forming. The clones face lit up in a joyous, genuine smile, which made his caring eyes sparkle.
"There we go, hi. I'm CT-1409, though my brothers call me Echo. I'm here today with my battalion to celebrate the promotion my brother Fives and I just got. I don't think the party life is for me though, that's why I went to you - since you seemed like you didn't much enjoy it either."
With a short chuckle, you nodded in agreement. "Not really no," you quickly felt like breathing became a lot easier.
"So, what brings you to the 79s then?"
"My friends. They think I'm too much of a shut-in, so they force me out to socialize. But they sometimes get too drunk and completely forgets I'm there."
Echo scrunched his nose at that. "That's not very nice. And you still wait around for them to notice you, before leaving?"
"I know they'll panic if I don't."
"What's your name?" Echo asked. You had completely forgotten that the two of you had just met. He felt so safe, like you had known him forever.
"Y/N," you replied. "How come you stayed around if you didn't like it so much?"
Echo looked awkwardly to the side and nervously began rubbing his neck. "Eh, my brother Fives. I knew he wouldn't get off my back, if I left early without someone else. Which is weird, since neither of us has any experience interacting with civilians before today.. But he thinks I'm too uptight, so, what can you do?" He chuckled.
Now it was your turn to scrunch your nose. "That doesn't sound very nice either. How come he thinks that?"
"Because I am," Echo admitted with another chuckle.
"How about we find somewhere more quiet to talk?" He then suggested, when two clones passed you by and whistled at the two of you.
You nodded. "Sounds good."
That's how your friendship began. The two of you spent the next few days like you were joined at the hip, learning more about each others world and lives and enjoyed quiet moments together.
Only problem was that Echo had to leave again and you began to panic, realizing that you might not ever see him again. That was the harsh reality of him being a soldier, afterall.
But Echo promised it wasn't going to be the last time you'd see him. Even went as far as to give you one of his medals as reassurance.
And he kept his promise. Everytime he had downtime on Coruscant he would contact you. Everytime you got so excited and happy, living on cloud nine while he was there.
Everytime he left though, your panic attacks would get worse and worse and you would isolate yourself even more from the outside world, completely shutting down until the next time you heard from Echo.
Which you always did.
Until you didn't.
One day, you couldn't reach the clone via your secret, private comlink. Which was fine, sometimes he was out of reach for it, or a mission took longer than expected. No need to worry. Everything's fine.
But you continued not being able to reach him and you had this feeling deep down that something terrible had happened.
You began going out again, but not to socialize or meet new people. No. You began going out to see if the 501st was spending some downtime on Coruscant, hoping that you might see Echo or someone who could tell you he was fine.
You knew it was dumb. You knew you shouldn't have gotten this attached to a clone, to a man whose whole life was about battle and was only created to die for someone else. You knew you should just move on with your life, but you couldn't. You needed to know what had happened.
Stars you wish you had just let go.
After what had felt like an eternity, troopers with armor painted with the recognisable 501st-blue began flocking to the scene of the 79s.
You were restless, trying to spot one who you could recognize among the many familiar faces.
And when you finally found one, your entire galaxy shattered. The way his face changed once he spotted you, told you everything you needed to know.
Echo was dead.
The war was over. Neither sides won. Millions had died for nothing.
You didn't want to move. You couldn't afford to move. But you couldn't stay in the new dictatorship that the Empire was creating Coruscant to become.
Desperate for money, you sold everything you owned - well, nearly everything. All you kept was a few particles of clothes and a medal. A medal you haven't seen for over a year. A medal that broke your heart into a thousand pieces once again. You couldn't sell that. It wasn't yours to sell.
You moved to a planet in the mid-rim that the new empire didn't seem to care about. It was seedy and filled with crime like Tatooine, but not as many people lived there and not as much foot traffic for it to gain the same attention. It wasn't much worse than living on the lower levels of Coruscant and at least the air was fresh.
And you were happy there. Or, at least content. So what if you worked a dead-end job and were sleeping on the floor of your way too small apartment, with the rats that had become your roommates?
At least here, you weren't constantly reminded of what you've lost, nor were there familiar faces breathing down your neck about every little new stupid law they've made. It wasn't perfect, but it was doable. It was working.
What the hell, you deserved a little treat. Everything was going so well and you had heard good things about something called Mantell Mix - a snacked named after the city it was created in. The city you now lived in.
While waiting for the treat to be made, you heard something familiar. Something that was once safe, now terrifying. A clone voice. Could the empire really have made their way to this planet?
Your blood ran cold and your heart began beating faster than it had in a long time. Though with a quick glance, you realized it wasn't clones. They might sound like it, but the 4 men and a little girl was definitely not clones.
You let out a relieved breath, when suddenly -
"Y/N?"
No way. Nope. It must be someone else with your name that the guy who sounded a lot like a clone but definitely wasn't one, called out to. You haven't had a panic attack for over a month, you've finally been able to let your nails grow out again, it's not you he's talking to, it's fine, just breathe.
"Echo, you know that person?" One of the other definitely-not-clones asked. It felt like a punch to your gut.
It wasn't your Echo. It couldn't be. Your Echo was dead. This was just another person who sounded a lot like a clone and who happened to have the exact same name. That was it. Nothing else.
And yet, you were completely frozen. Your head was turned to face the group, your eyes wide in horror, mouth agape yet nothing came in or out of it. You could barely hear what was being said from the sound of your own heartbeat pounding in your chest.
The man who sounded like a clone but definitely wasn't one took off his helmet. He was a bald, skinny, pale cyborg. He looked nothing like when you last saw him. Except for those eyes.
They were more tired and slightly lighter than last you saw them, but that caring shine was still there. Only Echo had that special shine to his eyes.
But Echo was dead. It had taken you so long to get over him, this couldn't be him, this was a cruel joke someone was pulling on you.
You hadn't realized you were stepping away, until your back hit a wall. That was all it took for you to break. For you to fall to the ground, desperately gasping for air, scratching away your own skin.
Someone was talking. You weren't sure who, you couldn't tell, all sounds became muffled and indestinctable.
The next thing you knew, someone was kneeling in front of you. They rested a hand on your knee, talking to you in a gentle voice while slowly making their way between your knees so you couldn't press them up against you any longer.
Then the same hand which had been on your knee grabbed your wrist, forcing your hand to the side so you couldn't scratch yourself any longer with it. The persons other hand - which was no longer a hand, but a scomplink - made it's way between your arm and your body. That persons whole forearm came to rest on your shoulder and forced your back to lean straight against the wall.
You let out a small scream as your body stiffened even more at this movement. The man in front of you didn't pull away though. Instead, he let go of your wrist and placed his flesh hand gingerly on your cheek.
"Shhh, it's okay. I'm not gonna hurt you, I'm just supporting you. I know it's a lot to ask, but do you think you can open your eyes again?"
No, you couldn't. You couldn't even breathe, opening your eyes was too difficult. So you just shook your head as much as the hand resting on your cheek allowed you.
With the way the man was sitting, you could no longer reach anything on yourself to scratch. He held you in a way that opened up your airways and though his position was intrusive, it was also comforting. Exactly how Echo always did to calm you down.
"Alright, that's fine. No rush." His thumb stroked over your cheek, wiping away a few tears. Then his forehead leaning against yours, keeping your head still and making it harder to hyperventilate.
His skin was colder than usual, but by now there was no doubt. This was your Echo. He had come back from the dead.
"I can't believe I got to see you again," he whispered, his warm breath feeling like a welcoming embrace from an old friend.
You finally managed to find your voice, though it was hard to understand through sobs. "You were dead. They said you were, how are you -"
"I know, Y/N, I know. But I promised a certain someone I'd return and I couldn't just leave them hanging." You could feel the careful smirk expressing those words.
Just like the first time he had pulled you out of a panic attack and the several others after that, Echo made you chuckle in order to stop the cycle of hyperventilating.
"Took you long enough," you whispered.
"I know," Echo replied, before kissing away the tears on the cheek his hand couldn't reach. "But I'm here now and I'm not going anywhere again."
