𝓣 he first time Dazai Osamu found out you liked astronomy, he thought it was stupid.
It was yet another normal day in the Port Mafia's old clinic—the little physician ran around the clinic doing her weekly inventory and organization, while the little prince of the port mafia watched her work from his comfortable seat on the medical bed.
Dazai tracked your movements as you scurried around the small clinic, idly swinging his legs. his curious, dark eyes managed to always make you feel a little bit uneasy. he hadn't even come in injured or anything that day, he was just… there.
somewhere along the way, he had randomly developed a habit of visiting the clinic more often—even when he had openly complained that he dreaded the place a lot compared to anywhere else in headquarters.
whenever you asked him about it, he always just shrugged and gave you a half-assed answer that went along the lines of: "just making sure you're doing your job, doc", whatever that meant. you couldn't be bothered to think about it too much, honestly. he was far too unpredictable for you to figure out.
after a while of just watching you walk around the clinic organizing the equipment and whatnot, Dazai finally slid off the medical bed, stretching his arms and legs as he stood straight and scanned the room with a bored sigh. you silently cheered to yourself, hoping he would finally leave out of sheer boredom. It was hard to work properly when someone was watching you so intensely— especially when that someone was the mafia's demon prodigy.
you swore you looked away from him for only a split second. but the moment you turned around again, he was already hovering near your personal work desk, humming as he picked up a book you had been reading during your rare free moments.
“astronomy? I didn't know you read this type of stuff”, he hummed in curiosity, turning the book around to skim the synopsis on the back. before he could even open the first page of the book, you were already by his side, snatching it right out of his hold.
“that's none of your business”, you huffed, hugging the book defensively against your chest as you turned to walk towards the bookshelves. he blinked at you in utter bafflement, his hands frozen in mid-air where he had just been holding the book.
“how rude. I just wanted to take a look”, he called out after you dramatically.
he watched your back and huffed a little under his breath when you didn't take the bait. “the stars are millions of light-years away, it's not like you could ever reach or touch them”, he said flatly, shoving his hands into the pockets of his pants as he watched you carefully tuck the old, worn out astronomy book securely onto the shelf.
“you're telling me that as if I didn't already know”, you shot back at him, your hands busying themselves with arranging the surrounding books to hide the slight tremor in your fingers.
“then I don't understand the curiosity you have for such things”, he countered. he walked forward until he was standing right next to you, staring at the few other astronomy books that had blended into the shelf full of heavy medical books.
your fingers paused on the spine of a book. slowly, you pulled it out and started flipping through the pages, stopping on a particularly eye-catching illustration of a constellation. for a second, your defensive posture melted and your eyes softened just a tad bit. “because they're beautiful”
Dazai stopped scanning the bookshelf, turning his head to look at you instead. he stared at you for a long moment, noticing how your eyes had softened more than he's ever seen before. after a few more seconds, he finally looked away with a quiet, dismissive huff.
“…that's a boring answer”
—
this week had been absolute hell on earth for you. you were exhausted to say the least. a particularly large turf war had been happening all week and your clinic was flooded almost every single day with wounded men. It was nothing out of the ordinary for you, really, turf wars were normal and so was having to treat a couple dozen injured men. but whenever it did get like this, you could barely even get any rest for yourself. despite that though, you still forced yourself to keep an orderly workspace.
the clinic was empty and eerily silent by now, save for the sound of your pen scratching against a medical chart you were filling in. at this hour, you had already finished up with treating and healing for the day, with only a few more paperwork to finish up before you could try to rest for a bit.
a sudden rhythmic tapping could be heard from the small glass window of the door, jolting you awake from your exhausted daze as your grip around the pen you had been holding tightened out of pure self defense instincts.
“relax, doc”, Dazai hummed as he pushed the door open and invited himself in. the nerve of this guy, really. “geez, you look like a corpse”, he snickered and walked towards your desk.
you consciously rubbed your eyes, as if that would help get rid of the dark circles under your eyes faster. “I'm busy”, you grumbled and whirled your chair around to continue doing your paperwork. “unless you're dying or bleeding on my floor, get out”
“always so harsh to your favorite patient”, he sighed, leaning his hip against your desk.
you rolled your eyes and averted your attention back to your work. just as you were about to get back to work, your blinking clock suddenly caught your attention from the corner of your eyes. It read 11:45 P.M.
your tired eyes suddenly widened as it dawned upon you what date it was today. according to the newspaper and journals you had managed to smuggle in, there was supposed to be a meteor shower tonight believed to be at exactly 12:00 A.M.
you looked from the clock to Dazai, second guessing yourself before you finally let out a little huff. it wasn't a bad thing to be selfish just this once, right?
you suddenly sprung up from your chair and grabbed your discarded coat, turning towards Dazai who was blinking at you, completely caught off guard by the sudden boost in energy.
“if you're going to bother me anyway, you might as well come with me”, you declared, not giving him a moment to register your words as you grabbed him by his sleeve and started marching towards the back fire exit.
“now wait a minute, doc. where exactly are we going?? this is basically kidnapping! do you know how bad it's going to be for you if word travels that the physician had kidnapped an executive?”, you ignored his nonsense and opened the fire exit, dragging him out with you with a sudden boost of bravery. you'd slap yourself later for acting like this towards an executive—said executive being Dazai nonetheless.
“at least tell me where we're going”, he sighed, not really trying to set himself free from your hold despite the dismissive tone.
“up”, you finally replied shortly. “there's a meteor shower tonight. since you love complaining about how unreachable the stars are, you might as well watch them fall”
there was actually another reason you had dragged Dazai with you. the headquarters' rooftop was strictly forbidden for anyone, even for high ranked members and executives. but you knew well enough that Dazai knew his way around more than anyone else in the mafia. he knew all the blind spots, all the bypassed codes, and that was exactly what you needed.
“eh? we're gonna stand in the cold just to watch some rocks burn up? sounds incredibly tedious. I'd rather not”, he said dismissively, yet still trailed along behind you.
“well, too bad. you're coming”, you huffed. you were mentally scolding yourself for talking like that to him. geez, if they didn't need your skill, you would've probably bit the curb by now.
though he kept up a theatrical whine, Dazai didn't actually resist the hold you had on his sleeve. in fact, he easily took the lead when you reached the elevators and the rest of the way up towards the rooftop was smooth sailing.
after punching in the code, Dazai pushes open the heavy metal doors to the rooftop with ease, the cold night air hitting the both of you immediately. you stared at the sky in awe for a moment. the Port Mafia's headquarters was tall, so tall that you felt like you could almost touch the stars at this height.
you made your way towards the edge of the concrete barrier, gripping onto the metal railings as you stared at the sky. Dazai lazily trailed behind you, stopping a few meters away from you as he also tilted his chin up to look at the sky.
“this is boring”, he complained, watching the stars blink in the sky with an almost deadpan expression. truthfully, he had no interest in stargazing at all, let alone astronomy in all it's ridiculousness.
before you could shoot an answer back to him, as if on cue, a brilliant streak of silver light cut across the dark expanse. followed by another, then another. and then dozens more.
your eyes lit up with childish glee as you watched the meteor shower with a triumphant smile. “not so boring now, is it?”, you exclaimed, turning around to look at him. he watched the streaks of silver light fall, shrugging his shoulders as he moved to stand beside you.
“I'm not interested”, he answered, putting up an act of yawning in boredom.
you clicked your tongue and turned your attention back to the sky. “you don't get it!”, you huffed, focusing your attention solely on the meteor shower now.
Dazai rocked back and forth against the balls of his feet in a fidgety boredom. he opened his mouth and turned his head to you to shoot another comment but stopped himself mid-way before he could even say anything.
he stared at you, really stared at you. because for once, he's seeing a side of you he's never seen outside of the all-knowing and mature physician facade.
working for the mafia at such a young age meant that people forgot the children who worked with the mafia were all just—well… children. children who were taught to harden their hearts and to act far too mature for their age.
for the first time, Dazai is seeing a childishness from you that he's never even thought you'd have. something that seemed entirely too pure for someone working in a hell hole like the Port Mafia. how curious, really.
the way the stars reflected in your eyes made them look less dull, made them look so…full of life, for once. and if he was to be honest, he preferred that look on you more than the dull, lightless eyes he'd grown accustomed to.
“I don't particularly care about the sky”, he finally murmured after a while of being completely silent. his voice had dropped into something very quiet, heavy and intensely focused.
“..but, I guess the stars aren't that bad”
you turned your head towards him to scold him for being a killjoy, but your words caught in your throat almost immediately.
instead of looking at the meteors, or even the sky, Dazai was quietly staring at you—only you. another meteor streaked through the sky and you caught the reflection of said meteor through his eyes. it seemed like in that moment, his dark, almost hollowed eyes seem to shine. even if it was only for a split second.
you snapped your head around quickly, trying to calm the sudden rapid heartbeats in your chest. what exactly was that?
“you say that yet you're not even looking at the stars”, you coughed and cleared your throat, feeling your cheeks involuntarily heat up so suddenly.
Dazai blinked, as if snapping himself out of some type of trance before turning his head away from you to actually look at the sky this time. he hummed and shoved his hands into the pockets of his pants.
“eh, they're still boring though”, he mumbled, not the slightest bit amused at the falling meteors.
CONTEXT reader gives dazai a little makeup for their date
NOTE fluff, SFW, first fanfic
Dazai didn’t even know how did he end up in the fancy room of a perky girl who’s very into fashion… and him. In front of him was a desk with makeup products scattered all over and a mirror displaying his reflection enhanced by lightings. Beside him was you, applying concealer right under his eyes before gently blending.
Your room was messy with magazines laid on the floor in all directions, wigs of all kind, glittering thousands of accessories and wardrobes full of stylish clothes. Despite the mess, your room was warm and cozy, a contrast to his dull room in a container.
“Is it doneee?” his voice came out with a sense of impatience, carrying a slightly dramatic tone. He tried to shift a little from the current position he was in for hours. His poor attempt failed miserably when he felt her pull him back.
“Come on, sweetie. Just a few more minutes,” you tried to reassure, “after this we could do whatever we wish. I have so many fun plans for us!!”
“Yeah, yeah, whatever. This day was already starting off tedious with this makeup section. But I can’t complain. I do like being touched by you and having all your attention on me,” he finished with a shameless smirk, hoping to get a flustered face.
“At least you get to see yourself differently and avoid your friends spotting you,” was the only thing you said in return, completely ignoring his cheeky comment. Dazai felt a little embarrassed but decided to act as if he was not affected by it.
By the time the makeup section was done, Dazai looked at himself in the mirror. You weren’t wrong; he did indeed looked different, his attractive features standing out clearly. His face wore a satisfied smile, impressed by your skills.
“I guess the time was worth it.. You’re quite the excellent artist, aren’t you?” he complimented as he tried making expressions with his new look.
“Of course. There’s no need to hesitate when it comes to trusting me,… in makeup,” your voice was filled with pride as you looked at him endearingly.
A random thought crossed his mind, “aren’t you afraid of other girls trying to steal me away from you with how handsome I look now?” he teased, waiting for your reaction.
“You dare think about flirting with other ladies?” you raised an eyebrow, feigning offense, “well, actually it’s okay. No girl will ever keep up with you the way I do. You will always end up returning to me in the end. Might lose me though.”
Your response amused Dazai. He was expecting you to be all jealous and possessive. Instead, this made him more interested in you.
