you just let it slip

of an exchange and it sits

on the screen or the air between us

and glares red hot.

and it doesn't matter, in one way,

just a few letters tossed together

harmless and carefree,

the result of young camaraderie

and a loose tongue and it's okay

it's okay, except it's not.

you're trying to inch around it

but it swells and towers

until i grasp it in my palm and hold

it towards you, eyes lingering,

stilted half second too long pause.

ask what you mean and you trip out

a quick laugh or

snappy explanation,

and i look you carefully in the eye,

all sharp full stops and straight backed grammar,

and tell you to never

say that word to me again.

then i step back, close my phone or walk away,

tall, full, anger nipping my ankles

all the way home.
