AT LINCOLN’S TOMB - The Lincoln Tomb and War Memorial State Historic Site (National Register Of U.S. Historic Places and a National Landmark) on the grounds of the Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield, Illinois. Built between 1868-74, this tomb holds the mortal remains of the 16th President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865), and his wife and children. President Lincoln led the United States to victory during the American Civil War (1861-65) and was assassinated soon after it’s conclusion. The tomb, itself, has it’s own tumultuous history involving temporary vaults, thwarted grave robber plots, secret reburials, numerous reconstructions, and several rededications. Lincoln currently rests in a crypt 10 feet below the granite Tomb Memorial. The striking obelisk sitting atop the tomb stands at 117 feet high. A bronze statue reproduction of Gutzon Borglum’s iconic Lincoln Bust, greets those who visit this popular tourist stop - the bronze nose shined smooth by the tourist tradition of rubbing it for “good luck.” Photo by Michael Huntington - June, 2017. @Huntington_Strange_Travels #MichaelHuntington #StrangeTravels #HuntingtonFamily #HuntingtonAdventures #LincolnsTomb #LincolnsTombMemorial #AbrahamLincoln #16thPresident #LincolnTombObelisk #LincolnGrave #BorglumLincoln #LincolnBust #LincolnsNose #OakRidgeCemetery #SpringfieldIllinois (at Lincoln Tomb)
