18 years ago today, Superbad hit theaters and it forever launched Michael into the spotlight in a way no one could ignore.
2007 was a year highly stacked for Michael. Just months before the film’s release, he debuted his own web series, better known as Clark and Michael, with his longtime friend Clark Duke. The web-series further showcased Michael’s intriguing sense of humor as both a writer and actor.
As the summer of ‘07 built up, so was Michael’s profile. He was making the late-night rounds, appearing on talk shows and charming audiences on Letterman in July, followed by his appearance on Conan in early August.
Michael and the cast of Superbad also hit Comic-Con later that month to build more hype around the film, then Michael hit the LA premiere on August 13th before the movie opened #1 worldwide at the box office.
In the midst of all the promo blitz, Michael also found time to star in the very first ever episode for the web series, Drunk History. Michael then starred and hosted an episode of SNL during the writers strike, which sadly never aired.
The press tour was relentless, but it cemented Michael as the face of a new wave era of comedy. Another notable mention is just a few months later, Michael would double down with Juno, another film that drew in admiration for Michael, premiering at film festivals and closing the year with critical acclaim and award buzz.
2007 wasn’t just the year Superbad came out—it was the year that saved Michael’s career. Without Superbad, Michael stated he felt he wouldn’t have been able to continue acting and would’ve probably struggled to find work, given the cancellation of Arrested Development in 2006.
Happy 18th to a film that defined an era and to the year that made a lifelong career.
