The Grates are one of those bands that flies under the radar for too often, and the Brisbane trio’s 2006 debut, Gravity Won’t Get You High, is a solid indie rock album. It has that low to mid fidelity aesthetic that I can’t get enough of, and executes it without sounding in any way amateurish. Patience Hodgson carries a vocal tone that really differentiates her from other singers within the genre, and stands as a shining symbol for women in indie rock. Love it, get on board with this one. Highlight tracks include I Won’t Survive, 19-20-20, Trampoline, Science Is Golden, and Inside Outside. Available on iTunes and Spotify.
