“Have you ever been kissed, Spock?" Kirk asked him softly, quite sudden and direct. 

Spock felt as though his heart and breath had stopped. Jim was looking at his lips, smiling. 

"Y'know, human kissed, Vulcan kissed . . .” Kirk continued. Spock stared straight ahead, terrified, and made no reply. It was all he could manage to breathe . . .

“Intentionally?” Jim laughed, propping up on an elbow, willing eye contact or some sign of life. Spock glared at the jovial man now, a healthy dose of reality settling in. He was deadpan:

“You are my first friend, Jim. Derive from that what you will.”

“Well, we’ve tried it your way . . .” Kirk’s voice finally dared to break that heated silence between them, husky and low. “And let’s be honest, I had no idea that it happened your way, which is hardly fair. You can’t really say that counts.” Jim's voice was flirtatious and soft.

Spock could feel Jim physically drawing near, seeking out more contact. He felt the coolness of that human body, felt Jim's breath on his face now. He heard the smile in Jim's voice when he said, gently: “I admit, I don't know a lot about Vulcan kissing. If it’s alright with you, I’d like to try it the human way.” 

It was so impossibly sweet, so charming, and Spock was stunned that this was a moment finally taking root in his life. 

These were not the kind of things that were supposed to ever happen to him. Certainly his life would be carried forward by his work, his intelligence . . . this was something he had never accounted for as a possibility. This was the first time a prospective being had asked to kiss or touch him that he was wholeheartedly interested in.

Still, his logic lay mortified and frozen in the face of this unaccounted for event, struggling to evaluate, but his human heart invited Jim in with a gentle nod. It was all the response that was needed to beckon Jim forward. Spock’s human heart was desperate for that to happen, seizing the opportunity as his Vulcan mind spiraled to recollect itself. 

He felt weak and hot as Jim swam up into his vision, taking up every sense Spock had. He was helpless against what was unfolding, a moment he never dreamed would happen to him in his lifetime. 

“Are you sure?” Jim asked hesitantly, impossibly handsome. Spock swallowed heavily, nodding affirmatively once more. He would never have been able to find his voice in that instance if he tried. His heart thudded in his ribcage as Jim leaned forward on his left forearm, and his right hand came up to gently touch the sharp jut of Spock’s left cheekbone, tracing up to the point of his left ear.

Jim’s smile was dazzling when he felt the full body shudder of excitement it elicited in the flushed Vulcan below his gaze, his touch. Spock involuntarily let out a deep breath as Jim took up every ounce of space left between them.

That time I met Bill Shatner and he was the absolute sweetest, most genuine person. ❤️

At the meet and greet I was head to toe green as I was cosplaying as an Orion! 🤣 He signed my art (paid me a lovely compliment by holding it up and asking: "Did I actually look that good?" To which I immediately replied: "to be frank, sir, it didn't do you justice." To which him and my sister exploded in belly laughs.)

He was excited to learn we are Canadian!

He chatted with us about missing home, how fun it was to grow up in the woods, and our favourite summer swimming holes in the Northern boreal by our cabins (for him, in Quebec). It was such a real, genuine conversation and he was so pleasant.

The next day when my sisters and I showed up for the photo above, he lit up when he saw us and said: "Hey, it's my Canadian girls!"

I know we hear a lot of stories about sassy or unapproachable Bill, and I don't doubt those moments happen. I just wanted to put it out into the universe how kind he was to my sisters and I, and how he remembered who we were. :)

Nevermind day, the whole experience of meeting our favourite captain made our lives!

Ever since I saw the Strange New Worlds episode Lost in Translation I was being driven insane by how familiar the tune playing in the background was.

To me it sounded like a jazz version of The Beatles cover of the song Till There Was You.

So I looked to see if anyone else was also stimming out over this and lo and behold:

It seems a lot of folks came to the same conclusion. Your thoughts?

Anyway, that was driving me wild for quite some time because technically, it's the song that was playing when Kirk and Spock formally met. ;)

Seems the verdict is Til There Was You. If anyone has any other info, feel free to jump in!

I am editing some Spock and McCoy banter for my next chapter that turns into a real moment and ugh.

Ugh.

I just love them both so much.

They started out seeing eye to eye on so little.

They have very different approaches on how they want to live their lives -- and of course, fighting over Jim.

And then it turns into well I don't like you oh yeah well I don't like you more in fact I enjoy telling you so oh yeah well -

And somewhere along the way they can't stand to see anything bad happening to the other and they both don't want to admit it but it's like --

Ahh fuck.

Ahh sheeiitt.

Jim Kirk's Scooby Doo Ahh Ahh shenanigans got us out here being friends and loving each other despite our best efforts not to do exactly that.

Well I ain't telling you that WELL I Ain't TELLING YOU EITHER --

And then Search For Spock happens and they genuinely have no choice but to live together and admit that is totally possible.

That they are that close that Spock could manage to do that with his Katra via McCoy just as well as he could Jim

And they STILL have the audacity to act like they don't give a shit about each other.

I just.

Slow clap.

Bravo.

Bra-fucking-vo, I am having a moment here again like 25 years deep into this same fandom and these idiots still make me this giddy and crazy.

Every time I write Spones I spin off on a feel-trip.

Every time I come back and start writing them, it's like getting into your most luxurious, trusty, comfy pyjamas because you know it ain't gonna disappoint. It always slaps.

Yeah they never overused that in TOS, they know they'd be too powerful. It's too much power, even for Jim Kirk.

Like nevermind Khan, imagine if Spock and Bones just got along perfectly at all times. What would Jim do? Is that what happened in the mirror universe?

Anyway, I digress.

Shout out to all my Spones peeps because this is giving me life right now.

The writers on TOS must have had an absolute blast any time they knew they had to do a Spones scene.

“This was a terrible idea.”

“Spock, don't you even think about–”

The screen went dead as Spock abruptly ended the call with his mother.

He turned sharply on his heel and began stomping toward his room, desperate to meditate. His comm. began sounding off noisily in the background, but he left it unattended.

He entered his room, lit his incense, and let it beep.

He took root on the mat in full lotus pose on the floor, trying to connect with his entirely too elevated breathing rate, and he let it beep.

He closed his eyes, rested his wrists on his knees, deepened his breathing . . .

beep-beep-beep-beep-beep. . . beep-beep-beep-beep-beep . . .

Spock huffed loudly in a long suffering manner before returning to a stance, tugging irritably at the hem of his shirt. He stalked back out of the bedroom into the main living quarters, positively rigid and seething with anxiety.

He made his way to the comm., slapped the button with far more gusto than was required, and stood before the screen as it descended once more. His hands were shaking where he clasped them behind his back, but he had to ensure he would reveal none of that.

His stance was defiant, and he was met with an equal wall of stubborn outrage when Amanda returned to the screen with a glare that could burn holes.

“My child, you will be the death of me one day.”

“But humankind is not dramatic at all,” he retorted, deadpan.

“What have you done with a human?”

“It was a kiss. Nothing more–”

“Nothing more?!” She hissed, eyes darting about herself again as if Sarek was going to come blasting through the door like a militant. “My child, you are engaged!”

“Yes. Thank you for the reminder, mother.”

“So can you explain to me why you have suddenly taken up the hobby of kissing humans on Earth?!”

“It is not!-” Spock caught himself getting elevated, steeled himself huffily, and began again more calmly: “It is not plural. And I believe long term exposure to the good doctor’s sarcasm has had an unfortunate effect-”

“--THE DOCTOR?!” His mother leapt from her chair, a great clatter sounding as her elbow caught her desk sharply. “--Ah!”

“--My wife?”

“NOT NOW SAREK, I'M WORKING!”

The Vulcan backed away from the study door his wife was behind with huge, worried eyes.

The last time Amanda had screeched at him in such a way, she had been pregnant. He knew better than to enter that room until he was invited – and from the sound of her composure, he was uncertain if he wished to be privy.

He scuttled away swiftly, seeking to enjoy what little time he had left remaining to be blissfully unaware of whatever lay behind that door for a few more moments.

When someone says TOS Jim and/or Spock ain't it:

Let's be real, Picard is also a weiner in First Contact. Both him and Kirk get a character development arc that shows they have room for improvement and how they grow from it in both stories.

Like First Contact, TMP serves as an important source of character development for Kirk and Spock (even though they signed on Nimoy so late into filming that it sadly doesn't read like that onscreen the way it should/did in the book).

For Jim, he has to learn the hard way that how great he was wasn't just about him being a captain -- it was about the core seven crew, how their insight and guidance is what helped shape him into a great leader, and how together they were an incredible force to be reckoned with. But Kirk has to admit that he needs them before he can grow from that realization.

Both Kirk and Picard have to swallow a great deal of pride, hubris, and wash it down with a tall glass of humbleness through the events of TMP/First Contact.

The point of TMP originally was to tell a story about **Spock**, especially his relationship to Kirk and how despite his fighting it, he belongs with his found family.

It also shows by contrast how Jim is also extraordinarily miserable in the life he ended up in and desperately wants to go back to his found family on the Enterprise crew. He took the promotion because everyone told him it was the natural next step in his career. And he hated it, or admitting he chose wrong.

It shows how separated they are both are miserable and kind of going through the motions, too proud to admit they hate it. Neither are relishing life or where they ended up because they focused too hard on the job and not enough on what fills their cup *while* working. And that's the concept of found family. They thought the job is what gave them life, but it is actually **who** they found through the job -- realising it was the people, not just the gig, that gave them life.

While that lovely story and concept is fairly clear via the TMP novel, the production issues, timing, conflicts with Nimoy and his contract etc led to a version of TMP onscreen that had very few genuine interactions between Spock and the og crew.

Even the much maligned Star Trek V at least had that poignant scene about McCoy and his father -- even that film, while insanely flawed, had some of that TOS of character heart.

Even the TMP sickbay scene, despite being lovely, falls kind of flat in the film because they had Nimoy for so little filming time that all the nuance and events that happened between the big events in the novel never made it to the film. But tons of special effects did.

That is a big part of what was left out/missing from TMP due to budget and time constraints. On screen, the story has always read as very disjointed and cerebral for that reason.

It culminates in the poignant sickbay scene which would have had a lot more impact had there been some of the of camaraderie we all enjoyed from the TOS show. Then that is paralleled with the V'Ger and Decker storyline.

What we ended up with was a very glossy, shiny film that had lots of great special effects and virtually none of that camaraderie, closeness, and humanity we all came to love and expect from the TOS crew and their stories in the TV series.

I mean none of us watching TOS pulled up specifically for mind boggling special effects, it was the characters, their dynamics, and the power of that found family against impossible odds that made us tune in -- and we didn't care if there were dogs in alien costumes for effects because we loved the characters and their stories.

Sadly, they just didn't have that time with Nimoy before the film was released to meaningfully develop some of the more personal/character driven facets of the novel -- they used up all their time doing special effects and rushed the Nimoy stuff at the end of production.

If they had had time to infuse some of that familiarity, camaraderie, and character development in between the big events and special effects of TMP the film, I think many more TOS fans would have loved it.

What we got isn't the same story as what is told in the novel, but I think TOS fans would have liked it a whole lot more of, you know . . . The TOS cast was actually in it, interacting, instead of moving from scene to scene with hardly any character interaction or development. It felt so cold and sterile, but sadly that's all the time they had.

TLDR: They should have just paid Nimoy in the first place, had him on board from the start, and made the film as they had wanted to instead of rushing to get it out for the sake of meeting a deadline.

The film we got lacked a lot of the heart and character development/camaraderie we came to know and love about TOS. While that was present in the book, the film lacked a great deal of that warmth. I like the film, but you can clearly see where it is lacking in the "tying the story back to the TOS crew" department, or their relationships.

Anyway, that was my take/two cents on why for a number of fans, the TMP film can sometimes feel quite heavily cerebral and lacking that warmth or spirit of the original show. I love it, but having read the novel I also get why it translated that way to screen given the plethora of limitations during filming.
