ἡ κεραία περιήγετο, τὸ ἱστίον καθίετο, ἡ ναῦς ἀπεσαλεύετο, τὰς ἀγκύρας ἀνέσπων, ὁ λιμὴν κατελείπετο· τὴν γῆν ἑωρῶμεν ἀπὸ τῆς νηὸς κατὰ μικρὸν ἀναχωροῦσαν, ὡς αὐτὴν πλέουσαν.

The yard-arm was spun round, the sails hoisted, the anchors reeled in, and the ship was let loose from the harbour. We watched the coast recede slowly from the ship, as though it too were sailing.

παιανισμὸς ἦν καὶ πολλή τις εὐχή, θεοὺς σωτῆρας καλοῦντες, εὐφημοῦντες αἴσιον τὸν πλοῦν γενέσθαι· τὸ πνεῦμα ᾔρετο σφοδρότερον, τὸ ἱστίον ἐκυρτοῦτο καὶ εἷλκε τὴν ναῦν. 

The sailors sang a paean, a long lyric prayer calling on the gods to be our protectors, wishing that our voyage would be a safe one. A strong wind picked up, filled the sail, and pulled our ship over the water.
