When you find a TMNT fan work that depicts Mikeys accurately:
(Mikeys can be a bit dumb and/or a bit naive. Mikey will literally say things like “careful guys this could be a trap” while they could not be more clearly in a trap and he’s just the last turtle to realize that it IS in a trap.)
Maybe some "Love at First Sight" or even "Soulmate AU" Headcanons for Mikey?? I love him so much, he's so underrated!! <3 <3 <3
YESSSSSSS
we're gonna go with '07 Mikey since I got nothin' for him.
Boy oh boy you already know how this is gonna start off
• He meets you at the birthday party for your younger siblings and damn near pops the mascot head off with his goo-goo eyes
• Seriously, he almost rips the damn thing off and asks for your number right then and there. Instead he introduces himself to you and shakes your hand, putting on that Mikey charm and hoping it transfers well through the costume (it does!)
• Is this what all those cheesy 2000's movies that Raph watches were all talking about? The palm sweating, chest aching, knees weak, arm spaghetti feeling that makes you feel like you're floating yet sinking at the same time?
• He watches as you walk away to inform your siblings and their friends that the real party arrived and decides in that moment he's gonna make this the best damn birthday they'll ever have
• He focuses on entertaining your siblings and friends but also makes sure to include you every now and then
• You had read reviews that Cowabunga Carl was great at what he does, but you didn't think he'd go this above and beyond
• Every time he makes a kid laugh his eyes automatically zip to yours to see if you're laughing as well (spoiler alert: you are)
• When he's swinging around the foam nunchucks, he may or may not put a little extra pizazz to impress you. He gives his spiel on how real nunchucks are dangerous weapons and shouldn't be played with like a toy. That's when one of the kids attempts to rip one out of his hands, to which Mikey gently bonks them on the head with the other.
• Thankfully the kid laughs and so do you! You quickly rush over to guide him away and apologize for their behavior but Mikey brushes it off with a 'No problem, dude!'. He forgets he's wearing the helmet when he winks but that's also okay because your smile turns a little shy at his response
• Soon his party slot time is coming to an end and he starts bidding the children goodbye. He's picking up his party gadgets when you come and offer him a slice of cake
• Is this a marriage proposal? He thinks it might be! But he keeps it cool and takes the dessert, thanking you with another handshake. You tell him he's more than welcomed to eat here and rest for a bit
• It's there that Mikey remembers that he's a mutant turtle wearing a costume... of a turtle
• Oh... yeah
• He politely declines and can instantly see the disappointment on your face BUT he does tell you quickly that he doesn't want to ruin the magic of Cowabunga Carl for the kids by taking the costume off
• The instant relief and smile makes his heart flutter. You tell him you understand and that if he needs anything before he goes to just let you know
• He asks for your name before you're even able to turn around
• You tell him and ask for his
• This is it, he's gonna take the risk
• "Michelangelo! But you can call me, anytime...?"
• He started off confident but then lost it towards the end because what exactly was he doing asking for a cutie's number while dressed as Cowabunga Carl...
• "You know! In case uh, you and your folks wanna book me again...?"
• Once again, damn nearly explodes right out of the costume when you laugh and offer your number
• "By the way you can just call me Mikey."
• "Oh good, I was torn between Michelangelo or Carl."
• Once your numbers are exchanged he saves his contact with a very snazzy photo of him doing a thumbs up and adding a turtle, skateboard, and pizza emoji to his name
• Yours is saved with orange hearts but he doesn't show you that
• He says goodbye to you and everyone else and then tells you he'll text you after his shift is over
• You say you're looking forward to it
• Once he's in the van he takes the head off and can't stop smiling.
• The cake is pretty damn delicious too
• And once he's driving, he realizes he'll have to tell you sooner or later about his true self
• He worries about that for another time
• For now he calls Donnie to give him an update
• "Don-- I think I'm in love."
Got an anon ask ‘who my least fav turtle is if Leo is my favourite’ and it made me realise I don’t draw my ACTUAL favourite turtle enough, so it might really look like that 😤
I wanted to doodles just the three recent ones but my brain went brrr, and my hand slipped and kept slipping until I got the whole orange fam (could probably still add a few more, maybe later). Anyway, MIKEY SUPREMACY ✨🧡🍊💪 (I love them all but he has a very special place in my heart).
So, I thought it might be fun to count down my favorite versions of our animated turtle boys! (I may do comic version later). It’s let me revisit some of the versions I don’t watch all that often and that’s always fun.
You all know I have to start with my favorite turtle, Michelangelo.
#1 1987 Michelangelo
This was my first intro to Michelangelo and he remains my favorite. I think he’s probably the nicest of all the Mikey’s and genuinely just wants people to be happy and have fun. I enjoy how he’s shown to be just as competent as his brothers in this series and they rely on him in turn. He has spiritual abilities—he can talk to animals and more than once he gets prophetic dreams. He takes his role of looking after his family’s morale seriously and truthfully, he’s damn good at it.
#2 1990 Mikey
The original movie series Mikey is such a doll. He’s fun loving and always making wise cracks or jokes but there’s also a sensitive side to him and he absolutely has other emotions than just “the fun one.” He’s not one to let out his own insecurity, hiding it under jokes, denial or even anger. (The fact we never got the extended scenes of his outbursts in the barn is a cinematic crime). But he’s also a talented fighter, has great chemistry with his brothers—especially Donnie—and I adore how while he still very much comes across as the baby of the family, he is not incompetent.
#3 2003 Mikey
Oh, I love you, darling and the writers did you so dirty! Honestly, I blame the writing for Mikey more than anything. Why Laird decided all comic relief must be from Mikey I will never understand. We saw hints of Mikey’s deeper side—his insecurity, his feeling like he doesn’t match up to his brothers, his interdependence on his family, his desire to truly help others, his love of animals. This Mikey puts up a mask and that mask hides so much more underneath it. It’s all here and they did next to nothing with it! It pretty much wrote itself! *sigh* Thank God for fans and fanfiction ….oh and when it comes to fighting, this Mikey is an absolute beast.
#4 Batman vs TMNT Mikey
This Mikey makes me laugh so much. He’s so full of energy and enthusiasm that it’s freaking contagious. He’s got a smile out of Batman—Batman!—and the way he just takes everything in stride is one reason I love him so much. They do tend to downplay his intelligence which is something, unfortunately, that happens to a lot of Mikeys but he’s not stupid. Naive, impulsive maybe but not stupid. And again, I love we see how he and Donnie interact!
#5 Rise Mikey
We finally got a version of Mikey that really delves into his empathy and his artistic tendencies. Yes, yes please! Dr, Feelings, Dr. Delicate Touch, these are such great expansions on that and really clever ways to explore it.
Oh and he actually is the youngest by a a few years and yes, that affects the dynamic and yes, I love it! His interactions with all his brothers is brilliant and I live for the affection these boys have for one another!
And can we talk about that mystic ability and how absolutely unhinged this Mikey could get? God, I love it! We were robbed of more of this awesomeness!
#6 2007 Mikey
The fact we didn’t see more of this Mikey is really a damn shame. The little we did see, I really enjoyed. His voice and design are great and it’s neat to see a Mikey who is a bit older. I enjoy that we see how much this Mikey really remains dependent on his brothers. His greeting to Leo when he comes back melts my heart and how he remains so dependent on Donnie and just…trusts him to find the answers. I really wish we’d seen this Mikey in the planned sequel where he has to save his family. Seeing him thrust into a situation where he doesn’t have that support he relies on would have been so cool to witness.
#7 Bayverse Mikey
I actually really like the Bayverse. It’s not perfect but I think there’s a lot of potential. Now, I definitely prefer Out of the Shadows characterization because they got rid of a lot of the “pervy” traits. This Mikey wants to belong and be accepted so damn badly. His “We’re not monsters” and his face just breaks my heart. He only wants to be able to be an actual teenager, to be heard and to be accepted and can you really blame him for that?
(The fact all his brothers utterly lose it on Krang for almost crushing him with “Nobody messes with Mikey!” will always be a movie highlight for me)
#8 2012 Mikey
Oh boy. So, while I definitely still like the Nick series, the writing utterly fails Mikey here. And it’s a shame because when they do write him well, it’s on fire! But they write him so terrible most of the time—he’s a punching bag, he’s presented as stupid most of the time, and they treat him as a perpetual child (“never really matured past six years old”) and that is such a disservice to his character. It feels like they saw him more as a ‘sidekick’ to the others rather than a hero in his own right. I still like him but there’s so much missed opportunities with this Mikey and it makes me sad.
#9 Mutant Mayhem Mikey
And we have someone new in last place. I do still like this Mikey though. But this makes only the second TMNT property (the other being 2012) where Mikey isn’t my favorite.
We don’t really get much to work with regarding MM Mikey. He has the least unique traits of his brothers. They gave him more vague or wide traits and the result is him feeling much less defined than his brothers.
And there’s his voice…I’m sorry, the voice just does not fit Mikey to me. It doesn’t sound like Mikey. I can’t feel it being Mikey. So I just can’t get behind it.
Sibling Prompt 24? With your pic of the Turtle bros?
ooh good one. here's the 2007 bros
"You don't get it," Raph says softly, a rare vulnerability breaking through the tension. "You don't know what it's like to be the family screw-up."
Donnie turns partly on his side towards Raph, fidgeting indecisively with the edges of his blanket. He's so tired. He doesn't know how to have this conversation.
Then stop screwing up, a part of him wants to say, and he wonders when he internalized such a harsh view on life. He knows, at any rate, that his first thought born of months of quiet frustration isn't the right one.
Thankfully, Mikey is there, curled up on the couch instead of in the pile of blankets on the floor.
"Nobody ever said you're a screw-up, dude," he chortles, as if the idea came out of nowhere and has no merit. It probably doesn't. At this late hour, Donnie can't tell.
Raph snorts. "You don't have to say it. I get it. I don't blame you."
Donnie extends a hand, as if they're little kids again and he's going to hold his brother's arm while they fall asleep, just so they both know they're not alone in the dark, that at least one person will still be there in the morning. At the last moment, he remembers he's an adult, and the open hand becomes a pointing finger resting firmly just inches from Raph's plastron.
"You," he slurs, "Are very good at sleeping. You should teach me sometime."
Raph snorts, and when he speaks again it's just a touch lighter than it was.
"I'm not as good at sleeping as you think."
Donnie says nothing, because what he really meant, and they both know it, is that Raph is good at keeping secrets. Any further details or questions about what he does while the others are sleeping would be throwing a lit match in a tank of gasoline.
"You're good at lots of things," Mikey protests. "Like fighting."
Donnie's eyes open wider in alarm. He sees Raph mirroring his expression, and they quickly look away from each other. They know what Mikey meant, that it was a compliment to Raph's skill in the dojo and nothing else.
"Soon," Mikey yawned, "Leo will be back and we can all fight together. Just like old times."
Donnie grimaced. If Mikey had been just a little more awake, he might have reminded him, for his own sake, that old times were never coming back. Or perhaps, if he himself were a little more awake, he wouldn't have.
Soon Mikey is snoring softly, leaving the ghost of old times between his remaining brothers. They used to have fun on nights like this, staying up late talking and watching movies, refusing to retreat to their own rooms, pulling their blankets out to the shared space and finally falling asleep together. Now it feels a bit like a joke, and Donnie can't figure out what they did wrong.
"We don't need Leo," he states firmly.
"I know," Raph snaps, and Donnie's irritation spikes because over the past few months it couldn't be more obvious that Raph does not know. Maybe if he can explain it better he can finally fix this, and they can all feel at home here again.
"We're allowed to miss him without needing him."
Raph sighs, and he sounds as tired as Donnie feels, and even more bitter.
"You need sleep," he says instead of answering. "Step one: close your eyes."
"Mm, too complicated. Do you have a beginner's course?"
"Yeah. Stare at the ceiling thinking about all the ways you screwed up, and hope no one notices."
Donnie rolls over to stare at the ceiling, following directions and giving Raph some vague semblance of privacy. "I don't think you're a screw-up."
Raph is quiet. He's clearly going to let Donnie think he fell asleep.
He doesn't believe him. Maybe if he'd answered quickly and confidently when it first came up, but not now. He can't take back his initial thought, which he's half-convinced Raph could read on his face, even in the dark without directly looking at him.
