3 Trends That are on Their Way Out
The past year saw some major changes to the fashion landscape, from the rise of the wedge sneaker (literally!) to the popularization of prints to bringing color back to the runways in a big way in the form of neon. In preparation for New York Fashion Week next month, we decided to take a look at which of these trends aren't faring so well going into 2013 so we can make room in our closets for some of what's to come.
Neon took the fashion scene by storm during September of 2011, appearing in collections ranging from Jil Sander to Jason Wu to Nanette Lepore. This trend hit your closets in June and took off throughout midsummer. With a brief resurgence in November, it looks like neon might be trending down for 2013. It's official - you can remove your shades now.
Tangerine Tango, the official Pantone of the year, started out strong in early June, peaking the week of June 18th. Appearing in Spring collections ranging from Derek Lam and Peter Som to Diane Von Furstenberg, this was a not-to-be-missed hue for the Spring season. Tangerine started to peter off in the Fall, though, and it looks like its sun might be setting, at least for this year. So clear your closets for Emerald, the Pantone of 2013!
That's right, folks, the party's winding down as the bracelet:outfit ratio has been on the decline since August. The art of wearing multiple pieces of wrist accouterments at once (as popularized by blogger Leandra Medine) is past its prime, and it's time to make like Coco Chanel and take off at least one piece of jewelry before you leave the house.
So, what do you think? Are you surprised, angry, enlightened? Thoughts and laments are welcome and encouraged!

I thought I was done feeling betrayed
You blew me off all year. I wasn't offended. I didn't take it personally.
Then you were like down the street, again, and continued to ignore me. Whatever.
and then I see you have time to visit a friend in yet another city? but there was never time for me? ever?
how can I not feel hurt?
I've been phased out. Time to move on, I guess.
I really loved you. I wish you the best.
2012: The Year in Beauty
This woman had everything in 2012. Damn her!
It was the best of times, it was the...best of times, really. 2012 was a big year for beauty, and we’ve got no complaints. (Except for the messy bun’s slow fade from glory. Nooooooo, don’t leave us!) A look back on the trends that took red carpets and our hearts by storm this year:
Braids: There was barely any room for sepia-toned pictures of cats and mason jars on the Internets in 2012, and we have braid mania to blame. What’s Maru up to? Who cares, we were too busy drooling over braids going every which way—to the side, upside-down, down low, and uh, right across your face few times. Vajacials: If you thought vajazzling was the height of pimpin' your ride, then this year proved you wrong. 2012 saw the rise of the vajacial, which is exactly what it sounds like if you think it sounds like a vagina facial. The treatment pampers your post-Brazilian hoo with stuff like exfoliation, CO2 treatments, vitamin C and retinol cream, extractions, and masks. Specialized Salons: In 2012, we just wanted a salon that did one thing and one thing only, dammit. NYC hair stylist John Barrett opened Barrett's Ponytail Bar, offering ponytail styling from the pros. Soon after, Butterfly Studio in New York City opened a bangs bar, making it easy to test-drive fringe. And there was also TheBroot in Santa Monica, a smoothie bar suspiciously bereft of smoothies but specializing in deep-conditioning hair masks made from fresh ingredients. Hair Chalking: Colorful tresses have been big for a while now, but commitment-phobes rejoiced this year when hair chalking took over. Pastel hues that wash out after a day, no emergency salon appointment required? Sign us up! Well, us and Lauren Conrad. And Nicki Minaj. And Avril Lavigne. Big Brows: 2012 was the year of bold brows, and we’ve got the collection of eyebrow pencils to prove it. Eyebrow transplants were in demand, with Megan Fox and Kardashian brows as the top requests. But it was actually man brows that had us most inspired—this year we actually had a good reason for bringing pictures of Peter Gallagher to our threading appointment. Textured Nails: Caviar, leather, rubber, feathers, and velvet. No, we’re not rummaging through a rich dominatrix’s purse, we’re listing our favorite nail trend of the year! Brands like Ciate and Nails, Inc. delivered big on textured finishes in 2012. The year ended strong with the December release of Nails, Inc.’s faux concrete polish, which suggests that faux fur and Astroturf manicures can’t be far away. Dream big, 2013.
There's ONE MORE DAY in 2012 to get any of these trends. Book an appointment on Lifebooker for brow shaping, manicures, and, yes, even vajacials.
Contagious, in partnership with Fleishman Hillard, released their Most Contagious 2012 report. Year-end is a time for overkill on hottest trends, top 10 lists, etc., but Contagious consistently delivers ahead of the curve information (as in - it's trending upwards, not peaking).
2012 Best Beauty Buys
Best Nail Polish:
Essie In Sugar Daddy
The creamy tint polishes tips for that fresh-from-the-manicurist feel.

Best Lip Gloss:
Chanel Glossimer
Plenty of lip glosses offer juicy color and glassy sheen. This formula has both in spades, but it really shines when it comes to texture. “This gloss feels smooth, rich, and never sticky,” says Vanessa Scali. The clever wand deposits just the right amount of pigment to lips—which stays put.
