Choosing Joy
Happy New Year, friends! Here’s to love and joy and books, travel and good food, happy memories, pleasant surprises, health and creativity!
It’s traditionally a time to set resolutions or goals. I’ve recently realised setting goals doesn’t agree with me (#PantserInWritingAndLife), so I have been thinking of an /intention/ for the new year. A direction to steer the sailboat, so to speak.
My intention for 2020 is simple: joy. I’ve spent a large part of the past few years putting myself under a lot of pressure, which resulted in a stalled creative life. Often I volunteered for things without consideration of my time and subsequently bit more than I could chew, which resulted in anxiety, and which often had me put off fun activities I’d rather have done instead. I let external factors affect the way I worked creatively. I’d lost my joy in writing for quite some time. I self-sabotaged with crippling procrastination.
So for this year I want joy. No deadlines, no targets, no lists of things to tick off. I want to indulge in wonderful books and rewarding experiences. In plenty of rest and self-care. In travel, if possible. In meeting new, interesting people, online and offline. In experimenting with cooking. In filling my home with fragrant flowers. In re-learning how to read my Tarot decks. In rediscovering my love for blogging. In feeling eager to delve in my fantasy worlds. These are all things I used to love and feel, and which fell by the wayside in the past few years, more or less.
I will steer my sailboat through the uncharted waters of 2020, using joy as my polaris. Here’s hoping it takes me where I want to go.
In which direction will you steer your sailboat this year?
