2020 Diversity Reading Challenge — August

This month's theme was Read local! And I sort of expanded the challenge to read some Brazilian books that were on my physical tbr, and re-read some of my favorites.

I've picked up some classic books, such as one of the first fantasy books written by a woman in Brazil and the first book written by a black woman published here. Both really interesting in their plots, narrations and historical aspects!

Between the big books, I got some re-reading done. Some of my favorite writers from where I was born and also a book by a new author. Also, I read this collection of short stories by writers of the place I live.

And finally, I read more short books by indie writers. I focused on looking for books by black or LGBTQ+ writers and it has been an amazing journey. I added so many more books to my tbr because I still have a lot to learn from my Brazilian authors!

Disability Awareness Month

Kaz Brekker from Six of Crows walks with a mobility aid. As does Leigh Bardugo. When I went to her book signing she talked about how she wanted to create a character who uses a stick but is still a badass and instills fear in everyone who hears his stick click down the street. That's the energy I hope to exude whilst using my stick instead of the pitying looks I sometimes get from people who think I'm too "young and pretty" to be using a stick.

This ink drawing took forever, remind me next time I decide to do ribbon work to do it digitally!

A little mid-month reading challenge update. This month’s theme for @bookslight​ diversity reading challenge is “TBR buster” and at the beginning of the year, I though I would devote July to only reading books of my physical tbr (preferably those that have been on that shelf for more than 12 months). However, netgalley had some very interesting eARCs in the last couple of months and I accumulated quite a few. And those are definitely also “to be read” (and reviewed). Therefore, I decided to change my TBR buster for this month from physical tbr to eARCs. My goal is to read:

K. Günak - Die Liebe kommt auf Zehenspitzen

A. Parry - The way of all flesh (Die Tinktur des Todes)

T. Hibbert - Get a life Chloe Brown (Kissing Cloe Brown)

L. Nelson Spielman - The star-crossed sisters of Tuscanny, also published as One Italian summer* (Heute schon für morgen träumen)

I think this is quite doable, especially since I am already more than halfway through the first book. Sadly, this means I cannot yet read the last in the La Passe-Miroir series. But I have a couple of days off at the beginning of August and will be able to really appreciate the book then.

* I am not 100% sure because the blurb is different. But the character names are identical and the country. Unfortunately, the legal notice does not give the book’s original title.

2020 Diversity Reading Challenge — April

It's Pet Appreciation Month! I didn't want to cry, but I did. A lot. However, the cat is one of the narrators in this book and its humour is on point! Cat and owner relationship is wholesome and they go on an amazing journey together.

The past couple of years I feel like I’ve been reading the same type of book  and I’ve had a bit of a YA fantasy overload. Therefore I’ve created a reading challenge for myself and anyone else who wants to join in. It’s based off UK and international monthly observances.

Each month I’ll read books that fit the prompt and post some bookish things related to it. Such as recommendations, book photography, bookish questions and quotes. I might structure it more later.
