Normal People
I read the book two years ago on christmas, when I found it in the apartment of my best friend. I always spent christmas there so I don't have to be at home. I spent the days in bed and read. Actually only took me a little over a day to read it.
I had heard about it before, and then three years ago it stood on the shelf in the apartment of your ex-girlfriend. I ran my fingers over the spine some times when you were out smoking on the balcony or around the corner.
The whole book got me, but there was something particular about the ending. I know it because my best friend had it underlined, just as I would have.
"You should go, she says. I'll always be here. You know that."
In the series her eyes have that solemn look that I can see my past self in. The way her shoulders fold in, how there is something so vulnerable and trusting in her expression when she looks at him. He sometimes holds his cigarette like you did. I can feel my own body remembering when they circle around each other in a room.
"It's not like this with other people."
"I know."
