This evening I saw the pre-post-apocalyptic musical 28 Seeds, a collaborative of acting company Liars & Believers and steamcrunk band Walter Sickert and the Army of Broken Toys.  AND GOD IT WAS TERRIFIC. I was in the front row, and by the end I ended up dancing with people and severed heads. So fucking fantastic.

28 Seeds - Review

I'll start off by saying that I am by no means a theatre expert (more of a music guru), but when I was invited to check out the new play, 28 Seeds, featuring music by Walter Sickert, I decided to check it out.

28 Seeds is a sci-fi play based on the 2010 original radio play and album, 28 Seeds:  The Last Radio Show, by Walter Sickert.  Walter in the frontman for the Apocalyptic folk Boston-based band, Walter Sickert and the Army of Broken Toys.  The band has earned the Boston Phoenix "Reader's Pick" for best artist the last two years in a row. 

The Steampunk musical was assisted with a Kickstarter campaign, and is a collaboration between experimental theater company Liars & Believers, Walter Sickert & the ARmy of BRoken TOys (story, music, lyrics), Meff (book), and Jason Salvic (direction).

So what is it about?  Without getting into too much detail, I'll just say it involves an asteroid, Oxy-gen forest, a peace ray, the pig flu, scientists, a general, a quirky talk show host, the president, Canada, Earth seeds, and more. 

Though it may sound bizarre, the story is easy to follow and well written.  The acting was equally as good, with and Steven Emanuelson (The General and others) and Lisa Dempsey (The President and others) delivering standout performances.  Honestly, everyone did a great job, and the supporting players are just as terrific.  The only character I didn't really care for was the patriotic man (played by a woman) with an over the top Boston accent.

The pacing of the performance was nice, and included a good mix of dialogue and music.  There are some funny lines, and I actually laughed out loud a few times.  In the second half, I thought the burlesque scenes dragged on a bit (I can't believe I just wrote that) compared to the rest of the performance, but things picked up by the end.

The music was arguably the star of the show.  Walter Sickert is located in the center of it all, with the rest of the band positioned around the perimeter of the stage.  Walter's voice is a bit raspy, with elements of rock and soul.  The bass and violin are heavy components of the performance, with the guitar, mandolin, drums, ukelele, and toys complimenting the sound. All in all, I liked it.  It was well done.  Again, I am no theatre expert.  This may not be the type of music I am typically drawn to, but I appreciated and enjoyed both the music and performance. 

If you are looking for a night out in the South End, and want to see and hear something a bit different, check it out.  If you do go, by the end you may just might find yourself dancing and chanting "Is it really the end of the world, well I hope so."

I went to this marvelous show called 28 Seeds last night. Sitting in the front row was the best. All the dancers smile and flirt with you and make you feel special. AND AND AND I got to go on STAGE! I draped myself all over this french guy and looked sexy and rubbed his hairy chest while Anthony flexed his muscles (he jump ropes, he's good). It was so much fun. And the show was brilliant. Even just putting aside the amazing/scary story, the performance and the set were excellent. It made me so so happy. So happy. It's fantastic, it really is, if you're near Boston, you should go see it. Or just fly here to see it.
